The Daily Nightly from NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams

About this blog

The Daily Nightly began on May 31, 2005. As Brian wrote in his first post it aims to provide a narrative of the broadcast day and a window into the editorial process at NBC Nightly News. Brian weighs in every weekday and NBC News correspondents and producers post regularly.

Brian Williams became the seventh anchor and managing editor in the history of NBC Nightly News on December 2, 2004. Read his full biography.

IF IT SOUNDS LIKE WAR, AND LOOKS LIKE WAR...

Israelis spending the night in bomb shelters. Volleys of rockets out of Lebanon. Cratered runways in Beirut. Bridges reduced to rubble. Scores of fatalities and injuries. Here we go again... and while we're not used to the din of this kind of escalated violence in the Middle East in recent years, a lot of this seems familiar -- even though the particulars of this explosive situation are unique. We have correspondents in position on the ground... including one of the places where, as an Israeli commander warned today, "nothing is safe." As is his wont, our colleague Richard Engel braved significant danger to get to where he is tonight. Martin Fletcher will also join us, as will Andrea Mitchell for the larger view of this. No one is calling this an all-out war. However, the European Union voiced its collective displeasure over this today -- saying, in effect, it helps no one.

We're watching oil prices closely...along with the effect on the other markets. We also have an interesting bellwether immigration story tonight, in addition to the sad tale of Barbaro.

On the topic of the bombing of the Beirut airport and the Israeli motivation: the post prior to mine, by Bob Windrem, has "gone viral" according to our editor... which means, as you web-savvy readers already know, that it has been e-mailed and linked to in enough places to have caused a breakout of chatter. That's a good thing. I was glad to learn Bob's personal health was unaffected, despite having heard my colleague had "gone viral." Bob's a one-man brain trust around here, who knows a lot about a lot.

Sadly, of all the robust e-mail responses to Bob's posting, I'm troubled once again to see that the most incendiary and thought-provoking e-mail of the bunch was sent anonymously. Any opinion worth voicing is worth standing behind, with the possible exception of George Kennan's famous op-ed piece in the New York Times, which arguably had a greater impact because of the byline "X." Anonymity works best in philanthropy, but in the public square of opinion (and in the case of the comment in question, because of my hunch that it is someone of note), it often merely adds to the generic background noise... something we already have too much of, all over the Web.

I expect a few changes in our broadcast lineup right up until airtime. Belated apologies for what I'm told was a "software malfunction" yesterday that made a bit of a mess of things here at The Daily Nightly. We hope you can join us for tonight's broadcast.

Militant Islam, extemists... After 20 years of studying the Quran I have come to one conclusion. The muslims that strap bombs to themselves are true believers of the Quran.. Those that believe in peace with the rest of the world are the extremists, the unbelievers. With the continuing mandate of the Quran to achieve peace by destroying Isreal and the rest of the unbelieving world, (infedels) this religion will either be destroyed or will continue to destroy until its mandate is fully carried out. There will never be any type of peace with the muslim world as long as there are believers in the Quran.

This war will either defuse for a while, or escalate into a collective Islamic war against Isreal. Once Jerusalem is invaded, then all hell breaks loose... Isreal will go nuclear and with over 300 5 megaton bombs targeting all the surrounding major cities of Islamic countries, hundreds of millions will die... But it won't stop the domino effect of every country eventually launching nuclear weapons... Its going to happen, if not soon, eventually. Its inevitable.

The magnitude and ferocity of the recent Israeli attacks on Lebanon have astonished the world including most of the staunch and unconditional supporters of Israeli policy. The escalation went and continues to go far beyond the initial stated aim of forcing the release of the abducted Israeli soldiers, extending to what amounts to be the destruction of Lebanon.

We are all aware of the fragility of the Lebanese State emerging from long years of civil war and foreign domination. The Lebanese government and the entire body politic is engaged in serious debate to achieve the implementation of all the UN resolutions, including disarming of Militia groups within the Country, and extending the legitimate government forces over the entire Lebanese territory.

The massive Israeli raids and the destruction of the infrastructure can only weaken the hand of the Lebanese government and hamper its capacity to achieve peace and stability in Lebanon and in the area. A peaceful, democratic and free Lebanon would be role model for its neighbors and a haven for free and liberal thinkers and freedom lovers Punishing Lebanon and destroying its infrastructure painstakingly built at great sacrifice runs the risk of promoting radical elements and threatens the very existence of the country and what it stands for. In addition it is the civilian population that mostly pays the price and not the combatants.

We implore our representatives and our government to seek an immediate cessation of the systematic destruction of Lebanon and encourage resolution of the difficult and complicated issues by diplomatic means.

We as Americans have been supporting Israel as a strategic country in the Middle east with US influence on its government. What a bunch of fools we are. It's the other way around; the US has become Israel's strategic ally with Israel influencing everything from politics to the media in the US. Our presidents have to compete for American Jews butt kissing before they can become presidents. Maybe we should participate in Israel's elections if we want changes here in the US, but again, only the Jews are allowed representation in the Israel Government.

Grow up all of you , as long as there is money driven world, there will always be power hungry war machines looking to gain from peaceful humans, this will never stop until we are all dust, live with it, deal with it and suffer with it, it has always been like this.
It is not about religion it is about power. Always has been ,always will be.

correct me here,
why bomb those trains in india, spain, clubs in indo, WTC... just a few. aythose death were all civillian. whats the point?
why sunni and shite keep killing each other everyday? there's lot of why and wonder?

Israel belongs to the Jews It was promised to them by
God to Abrahm, not to the palistinians. The Israelie
home land was stolen form them in 70 AD from the Romans and it is theirs I dont care what the Arabs say.

Fight Israel for what God has promise to you.

I think the UN should have issued as resolution telling Hezbollah to stop, Israel to stop, Syria to stop, etc. Then after no one stopped they could issue a STERN resolution telling them to stop. After no one stops and more countries get involved, they could issue a SEVERE resolution, etc. The UN would need a bigger thesaurus though if they want to stay the course.

who are Israelis ? During 1950s/1960s there was a country called palestine. looted money power(?) with some crooked brain established israel and dumped jews from west to that land. Can any body deny this? OK, IT may be HISTORY now? Remember, every one to go below the ground with due respect oneday. We have to realise the new DRAKULAS (blood sucking ammunition lobby)of the world. They dont mind to fry young kids body and eat with their drink whether he/she is from lebanon or israel or from anybody other than their of own blood relative. Statements from world leaders (if they are) should not be one sided. Otherwise it is a shame to be called them as the leaders and they might struggle when they are stripped from power by the GOD. Then they can say a word SORRY FOR WHAT HAPPEND IN .........19..... - MAY GOD BLESS ALL PEACE LOVING PEOPLE OF ALL RACE.(NOT LIP SERVICE PERSONALS.)

Mr. Brian Williams,

Regarding your remark about anonymity, I would like to say that most people understand the internet is not the place to indiscriminately reveal personal information, such as name and location.

one major problem is the fact that most americans believe that the palestanians are the reason there can't be peace in the region. If we do a littles research we'll find out that the palestanins are homeless because israel has control aver their land and have them reduced to beggars. they have virtually no rights. they need permission from the jews to even travel within their territories. have we ever paid attention to israeli soldiers shooting at palestenians teens throwing rocks at their amored vehicles? have you ever noticed how they destroyed palestenians homes because someone in the house is fighting against the occupation of their land by israel? there is so much israel has done to create hatred toward them. for instance, many palestanians have to go out to catch water from a pipe to cook and wash, when right across from them the jews have a pool full of water. no one on this planet would want to live under such conditions. if america would ever be occupied by another country i don't think we americans would bow to that foreign power. we would do exactly what the palestenians are doing, trying to have what many take for granted here, basic human rights and freedom. we are all humans and we should not allow for another human to suffer unjustly because of the color of their skin . there can never be peace if we continue to follow that logic. israel should not be allow to kill so many innocent people under any pretext. if we are god loving and we must insist on justice for everyone in this world.

There is no reason why americans should have to wake up 4 hours earlier to go to work. This is not India. We paid our dues and we're entitled to a normal decent life. We had a system which worked however we have european minded leaders trying so hard to europeanize this country. We have our own way of doing things and that is the american way. We should stick to it. Americans are second to none when it comes to finding oil and extracting it from the earth. Let the drilling begin...My point earlier is that we are not so dependent on mid-east oil and I wish the talking heads stop force feeding us that idea. We are by no means self sufficent when it comes to our energy needs. Efficent, I don't know but again name one country which is...I travel the world a lot and despite all our problems and all our incompetent leaders, this country is by far the best country in the world. I traveled to Lebanon last year and I am trully sad about what is happening to it. Despite all you hear or see on TV, most countries, including those in the mid-east, love america and try very hard to emulate its success and ways of doing things. I only hope that some day our leaders wake up and start putting the interests of the american people ahead of those of big corporations and of some shitty little countries.

Exactly the point, innocence. People think that waking up and spending 2hrs to travel 100miles to work in a car is tough. Have you seen the world? US is not the only country that is big. People wake 4hrs earlier to sit in overcrowded buses to get to work.

Of course in those cases, you do not have to worry about $5/gallon. Do you?

Ahem, the presented facts that US is almost energy effient needs quite a lot of correction. People who read that will be laughin.

It's time to turn the mid-east into a big glass crater........................

This is only speculation on mypoint. I do not want to reiterate everything that was said earlier. I speculate that the war will spread initially with rumors(true or not) involving Iran in this campaign. Israel will do the world a favor and blow up its nuclear facility. (They did this to Sadaam Hussein one time way back...bombed a strategic site.) Syria will be found to have held Saddam's wepons of mass destructions that he hid there right before we launched our invasion of Iraq. Syria & Iran will get involve din this war...China & Russia will support Iran -- since they are key oil distrubutors for them. We will come to aid of Israel...Europe will get involved...France will join sides against us...as they usually do and then flop back to our side. After years of fighting..now WWIII, Russia will switch sides against Iran & China and then fight alongside us and push the Chinese back into Asia. Just a speculation!

Lebenon is a peaceful country. Is it right for Isreal to attack it? No! But, Lebonon needs to eliminate Hezballah. They also need to stand up to Syria. After all, the war with Isreal and Syria is only being fought in Lebenon. Lebenon needs to stand up against Syria; not fight Isreal.

The only way to effectively deal with a termite problem is to destroy the entire nest.

Only an idiot couldn't have seen this coming. The whole time most of the Arab States have sat on the fence.
Even reading the posts here, I mostly see finger pointing, a rehashing of old history(some wrong)and an anger or hatred that goes back further than this current event.
The U.N. is a pile of crap, so forget them. This one is up to the Arab States to work out. For once, they have no one to blame but themselves for allowing the fleas to keep biting the leg of the dog.
They better do it quick, that dog is pretty pissed and it has the war chest to make for once really interesting flea bath.

$5/gal? Are you nuts. Gas is not cheap in this country at all even at $3/gal. Stop comparing this country to the rest of world. Nowehere else in this world do people drive at least 30 miles to work daily. this is a huge country and we do not have any good public transportation to speak of. Automobiles are basically the only means of transportation we have. For you information the US produce about 52% of its energy needs. We import about 25% from Canada, 7% from Mexico, 7% from Venezuela, 5% from Africa and the rest from the middle east and that is not much. So stop telling us we are so dependent on mid-east oil and gas. Nobody is watching after our interests and that is the painful truth.....

You moved into someone else's house(PALASTINE) LEGALLY. The owner family is not too happy. You use their bed, their spoon, and that warm couch of theirs. You are LEGAL, they are not. The rash youth(HAMAS) of their family starts to provoke you and tries all means to get you to move out. They get their neighbours who have been in good relations with them to help them shove you out. One neighbour has a violent son(HAZBULLAH) who use more drastic measures. You retaliate and burn that neighbour's house, kill their dog, spread rumour about them.

Other neighbours will have other thoughts about having you as neighbour.

Question is: Who determined it is LEGAL for you to move into THAT HOUSE?

They are the culprits of this crisis.

The last time I looked, its the US, UK, France and Russia who decided that Polish Jews, and all the other Jews should move to a newly created land called ISRAEL.

And WHY are there so many people in America and Europe wanting to ship Jews away? WHY are there so many people hating them? They must have done something, to create the hatred...is it so deep the hatred?

Without Israel providing a balance in the middle east the cost of gas would be out of sight. Notice when you give "democracy" to "palestineans" they vote in Hamas who are terrorists. Israel has no desire for war, but when faced with anti-semitic violence they will defend and if necessary go on the offense. They will not negotiate with terrorists and those who take their soldiers and demand ransom like prisoner exchanges will pay the price. If only we had a president like Olmert, Sharon, Rabin etc. You should thank G-d that Israel is there and that it protects itself. You should thank G-d that you are not in the middle east having to truly deal with these matters. Our consequences are inflated gasoline prices, but overall we are safe. Hizbollah and Hamas are terrorist organizations and anyone who doesn't realize this is truly delusional.

About $5/gallon, US citizens do have an undisputed advantage compared to other countries. At the present moment, US petrol prices are FAR CHEAPER than those of most countries. The only reason you feel the pinch is because WE LIKE TO DRIVE BIG FAT GAS-GAZZLING CARS! Learn from the world for ONCE. Drive small cars. You will save thousands. And how to fit in smaller cars? LOSE WEIGHT is a good start.

Have you heard of Gas-Taxes all over the world instead of Gas-Subsidies? If US goes to $5/gallon, what will happen to the poor souls not living in the US?

Allen, Iran waited to let the American hostages go when they did because President Carter was a Christian. The head of their government hated Christians then, just as they hate Jews then and now.

Israel has tried to appease the Palestinians in Gaza. They have forced their own Jewish settlers out of their own homes, kicking and screaming, with Israeli soldiers ordered to assist in this. And were the Palestinians and Arabs from other countries happy? No. It doesn't matter what Israel does to try to get along with their Arab neighbors, it is never enough. In the Arab's mosques, hatred toward Jews is preached. I do not blame Israel for defending their national borders and for doing whatever it feels it needs to do to get its soldiers back. I am for peace, but not at any cost. Sometimes war is justified.

It's summer again and things have gone awry. The President has said he's shortening his vacation but the world does not take time off anymore. His refusal to call for a ceasefire in Lebanon, just as the invasion of Iraq, may come to haunt the entire world. So much for the overthrow of Saddam leading to peace in the Mideast. $5/gallon for gas is the least of the woe we may face.

As much as I hate to say it, sometimes we need to turn a blind eye once in a while. I am American, not a Muslim or Jew. At this time we need to stop supporting Isreal, financially, but not morally. I understand their right to existence, etc, etc. We have all heard it over and ever again in the papers. For once can we take our noses out of others affairs and concentrate on our own?
I can't walk in my neighborhood with security, I can't send my child to my local underfunded public school, there are so many families on welfare, for once just once can this great country of ours clean up its own backyard? For one year take that $8-10 BILLION a year that we send to Isreal and fix our schools, create a medical plan for those without insurance, etc, etc. This is just an example, money is funneled to so many countries, not just Isreal, Pakistan, India, etc, fix us before we go the way of the Romans.
