The Marines
A big story rocks the U.S. Marine Corps today... the arrest of seven Marines (and one sailor) in a case we've reported on from Iraq... and the latest of several stories of misconduct in the commission of this violent conflict. Jim Miklaszewski will start us off in all likelihood tonight. We'll also report on today's killing of Saddam Hussein's lawyer and the kidnapping that took place there today. David Gregory will report on the president's European trip and Martin Savidge will take a look at the debate in this country about when American troops should come home from Iraq.
Tonight Anne Thompson will offer us a different look at one of America's most storied employers and manufacturers: General Motors. Pete Williams will look at the red-hot issue of privacy tonight, and Roger O'Neil will have a look at a new venue for worship. Talk about a different pew. There's also a troubling story afloat about the San Andreas fault.
Non-stop meetings here today -- interrupted only by an enjoyable lunch with our great class of summer interns -- the best and most talented collection of young people I think we've ever had. Other than that, today was all business, which I must now go back to as I head into the newsroom.
We hope you can join us for tonight's broadcast.

I agree with J.White. While I agree that these actions are wrong, why aren't these things dealt with within, rather than in the public eye? Why does the public even need to know about it? As if the country wasn't divided enough. Selling out your country for a story really isn't much of a sell.

Brian, why do you always follow up with a story that puts the USA in a bad light, it's like feeding ammunition to the terrorists? I realise that you are really negative toward the President but, why show such feelings to the enemy?? They love hearing of the divide in this country, why give them satisfaction?? It really turns me off watching the news these days, which one of you has something good to say about our country?? We need to show a UNITED USA, maybe then we can bring this war to a quicker end!! Shame on all of you newscasters...

Brian, I have been a loyal viewer since Katrina but I barely made it through this broadcast. The killings, the deaths, the soldier abuses, even the deaths in the Florida prison just sickened me so much I almost couldn't breathe. I am grateful to have the knowledge of what's going on around me but, honestly, what is wrong with this world? We elect leaders in the US to represent us and get some real work done and all they can do is squabble and carry on about the most petty things while real people's lives are seriously affected by the economy, lack of heath care, poor education and so forth. Conflicts in other parts of the world like Darfur just go on and on while people endlessly debate definitions of words like genocide and terror. The Palestinians fight each other and they live in poverty. Korea wants to test missiles. Iran wants to wipe Israel off the map. The daily stresses on Iraqi civilians are horrible and gut-wrenching. And so many of the lives lost in Iraq were due to poor planning and guidance by this administration. Sometimes I feel so powerless as I watch these things take place. I know. of course, that I am not the only one who feels this way. I try to do what I can in my community on a more local level and sometimes that is the only thing that keeps me going.

I was extremely disappointed with the way msnbc.com presented the San Andreas fault information. What was the purpose behind the screaming headline "L.A. About to Explode" other than to create mass hysteria? People who live in California, particularly on a fault line, know the risks well. I expect better from NBC.

Yesterday Senator Hagel (Republican -NE) made these comments on the Senate floor about GOP members using political spin on the Iraq War debate.
From CSPAN transcript: "This debate should transcend cynical attempts to turn public frustration with the war in Iraq into an electoral advantage. It should be taken more seriously than to simply retreat into focus-group tested buzz words and phrases like “cut and run,” catchy political slogans that debase the seriousness of war. War’s not a partisan issue, Mr. President. It should not be held hostage to political agendas. War should not be drug down into the political muck. America deserves better. Our men and women fighting and dying deserve better. "
Amen to Senator Hagel for having the guts to speak out! It is outrageous to use these inflammatory spin words for political purposes when 2,500 soldiers have been killed and thousands severely maimed. The political spin does not serve our troops or our country.
A serious debate needs to occur. We cannot go on indefinitely without a realistic plan that is bipartisan. Shame on any politician from either party that would use this debate for their political purposes!

Brian,
The news just seems to get worse the longer we are into this war. Eight young men are going to be tried for war crimes, yet we are losing young people to the very people they are trying to train. Another was apologized for today here in CA by the US military because the son was shot in the back by Iraqi soldiers he was training, and the military tried to cover it up, but the mother kept saying something didn't add up. We should start at the top of the chain of command and hold those responsible for going to war instead of the young people who are sent into harms way for lies and fear. These people are terriorist, not people who understand the rules of the game. Slaughter is all they understand now and all they will ever understand. America's kids need to come home and in one piece and alive. These soldiers who are going to be tried for war crimes, need the best attorneys that money can buy. I can only pray for the ones still in a losing battle, the ones who have fallen, the ones who are maimed and their families.
