Junebugs
June 1 is a special day here at NBC News.
Sure, some sad things have happened on this day. James Buchanan, our 15th President, died. And you'll all remember when the Roman Emperor Marcus Didius was murdered in his palace in the year 193. (I believe that was sometime before Brian took over Nightly News.)
But good things have happened, too. In 1926, Andy Griffith, the Sheriff of Mayberry, was born. And, in 1925, the great New York Yankee Lou Gehrig replaced Wally Pipp at first base -- the beginning of Lou's historic 2,130 consecutive game streak.
But wait. There's more. The reason June 1 is a special day around here is because of a Ripley's-Believe-It-Or-Not-style coincidence. The shared birthday of four, yes, FOUR NBC News loyal colleagues, beloved friends and active bloggers.
For years, Senior Producers Lisa Green, Albert Oetgen, Eric Wishnie and Vice President Bonnie Optekman have all sat, literally, within FEET of one another in the Nightly News office area. Sure, we share a rich history with the network that includes award-winning journalism -- but more importantly, we've spent countless hours talking baseball, solving the world's problems and blogging for The Daily Nightly.
Our names above are linked to our most recent posts. Happy Birthday, fellow June Firsters!
P.S. If you'd like to know how old we are, a hint, our ages match the uniform numbers of the following former Major Leaguers: Bob Grim, Don Drysdale, Early Wynn, Tom Sturdivant.

Okay Eric. Happy birthday. You forced me to stop my work longer than I anticipated because after I checked the blog today I had to solve the puzzle of birthdays. In addition to being a music fan (I responded to your nov. blog) I thought I was pretty knowledgeable about baseball pitcher facts (dated one too long, learned too much) but all I could remember was Early's number 24. Because senior producer title is by your name, I was off to the hall of fame website to figure that out. Glad to learn you have some years on you. I hope you and your colleagues, including Brian, continue to enjoy the blog as much as the community of readers have this past year.
