The Daily Nightly from NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams

About this blog

The Daily Nightly began on May 31, 2005. As Brian wrote in his first post it aims to provide a narrative of the broadcast day and a window into the editorial process at NBC Nightly News. Brian weighs in every weekday and NBC News correspondents and producers post regularly.

Brian Williams became the seventh anchor and managing editor in the history of NBC Nightly News on December 2, 2004. Read his full biography.

Here, Pinky! Come here, Pinky!

Wednesday night, George Lewis gave us a terrific primer on a fascinating Web site... the ever popular [VIDEO LINK]. His piece ended with a clip Brian feels is a modern classic in the annals of Web video. It is known far and wide as "Pinky the Cat." (Click to watch.) As he said last night, "It never disappoints."

I had not seen it before, and I have to say, I'm now a convert to "Pinky." I watched it once, but like good art or a good book: It makes you think. It stays with you. It makes you ask questions.

And here's what we are left with: where IS Pinky now? I didn't spend all day Thursday on this (we did have news out of the White House and Supreme Court after all), but a few hours of phone calls and yes, Googling, gives us no definitive leads on what happened to Pinky.

Is he adopted? Is he still looking for a home? Or, has he gone on to a place where he is free to be Pinky?

So, America: What happened to Pinky the cat? Someone out there knows. And we need to know. Click "Discuss" to give us any leads.

Where IS pinky now? Or rather, what did happen after the video? I could see the handler taking him home; one of our cats bit my husband and sent him to the emergency room. My husband looooves that cat. Being picked for injury just sparked a bond between them. ?@!

Did they call him "Pinky" after the digits he's ripped out?

Thanks for the great leads, Daily Nightly folks. We did have calls out to Placer County SPCA, so we'll follow up on those again.

My family discovered that the only thing more fun than watching Pinky the Cat, is watching it with the sound up while your dog is running around the house trying to figure out WHERE the heck that screaming cat is. Happy Fourth, everyone

Have you been in touch with the Placer County SPCA? It's a wonderful organization, and if Pinky was truly being adopted from there I'll bet they'll know what happened to her. or

Ahhhh!! vintage humor..had me laughin' just as hard the second time.

Pinky is living in a cave somewhere in the rugged mountains of Northern Pakistan. Despite a huge reward no other cat has been willing to come forward and reveal Pinky's whereabouts.

That clip is nearly 10 years old anbd has been shown on just about every "When live TV goes wrong" special thats been made since. I remember an early showing that he ran off and wasn't found after that clip.

At this point, sadly, chances are good that Pinky is no longer with us.

I have it from a reliable source that "Pinky" was adopted by Lyndie England shortly before her Abu Ghraib duties... 'Information Extraction Specialist' was his last assignment.

The pinky clip is at least 10 years old and was filmed at the animal shelter in Auburn, Ca.

Forget John McCain! Down with Hillary Clinton! Pinky for President in '08!!!

I must applaud Pinky's "I am what I am, adoption be damned" attitude.

They can never take your freedom, Pinky! Live free!

I always feel like I must have sub-normal intelligence when I laugh at things like this, but laugh I did. In Pinky's defense, some cats get totally freaked when they are on a leash. So I'm sure he's quite adoptable as long as his human doesn't feel the need to take him on walks. Hope you're able to track him down.

What about the dude Pinky took a chunk out of? Has he found a different vocation?
