Capital landscaping

A tree toppled at our house last night. It lay still and dormant, its branches no longer full of happy congregations. This isn't back at the Kretman home in a Washington suburb, but at the house I work at for NBC News --- the White House. The tree -- a 140-year-old American Elm with a history that goes back into the 19th century -- survived rain, snow and political winds nearly all the way back to Abraham Lincoln. Limbs from its likeness appear on the back of the $20 bill.
Today, U.S. National Park Service employees busily performed the last acts -- cutting off branches and the trunk, lugging them away in big dump trucks. It was sad to see the end of a living piece of American history -- a reminder that there is no immortality in Washington, D.C., especially at the White House.

Is this REALLY all we have to talk about?

The last original tree was cut down a couple of years ago because its squirrels were bothering the POTUS. It seemed a shame at the time, everything there now has been planted. They cut the trees square in Albany, NY in the Capital complex, maybe to cut down on squirrel networking. Perhaps the White House should follow and play square with the People.

Why don't they make a gavel, that can be used to close an impeachment sentencing?

It would be fitting for someone to make an effort to make something beautiful out of the remains of such a magnificent tree. What a shame that this lovely part of nature is being made a target (an excuse) for anger and sarcastic remarks that are actually political issues.

If Mr. Bush did not claim to have such a close relationship with God, the irony would not be so painfully apt.

TREES WERE MADE BY GOD JUST LIKE THE POEM SAID.
I CAN NOT UNDERSTAND WHY EVERYONE IS SO QUICK TO BLAME THE PRESIDENT FOR AN ACT OF GOD; JUST LIKE KATRINA. I THINK IT IS TIME FOR THE AMERICAN PEOPLE TO GROW UP.

Robert-
Yup, the President that wants to scuttle the Clean Water Act is the same as my car not starting - like you, I see no difference.
Get some help to let responsibility be laid where it is deserved. George Bush is ipso facto "leader" of this nation, and his blind eye toward the environment - ceremonial, non-extraction industry attractive marine preserve not withstanding - affects us all. Even you.

Ok, it rained to much, the tree fell over. I love trees, and realize their impact on our environment. There is a lot of anger and bitterness in our country. It is a shame that the current administration has stirred up so many negative feelings. But when you think about it all administrations in this country have had groups that did not support their agenda. That's life in these UNITED States.

How interesting that for the liberals screaming at the gate about Bush Administration corruption, the tree was "on the far right" in the frame of the White House. Equally interesting in the wake of the Clinton Gore Administration corruption, was that the tree, viewed from the White House, was on 'the far left' .... Seems the far fetched nightmare Al Gore tried to launch with his corrupt attack on Florida Law in 2000 is finally over; John Kerry, known to some Democratic party types as "JFK" is still not Vice-President. Oh that darn tree ..., and the "lightning" that struck it ....

Sterling, I agree: FEMA trailers on the White House lawn for all the squirrels...inside and out of the West Wing.

I just saw that tree last Monday. Hope they kept some of the cuttings.

While I understand those who are extremely angry at this administration and do need outlets for their frustrations, I gotta go with Bart's suggestion. They really should build something out of the tree and place it in the White House. That would certainly be a fitting tribute for it- spend as many years on the inside as it did the outside.
Also, Diann, get over yourself. Alot of us served so people could stand up and protest. It doesn't make them stupid just because you might disagree with their viewpoint.

All things must pass but with the dramatic weather changes and the atrocities that are happining around the world not only in the white house one must think that possibly we have overstepped our boundaries and maybe our time here is at an end it wouldn't be the first time, we destroy everything we touch and kill each other over the stupidest things we rather fight each other than help ourselfs as a species. If there is a god then he/she must be looking down and shaking his/her head at the mistake that was made in the creation of a species that can't see past the color of skin or the belief in something or someone that another being can't understand and thus feels the need to destroy it because it is different. In the end we are all the same and are given freedom to do and think as we wise freedom of choice whats so wrong with that. It is sad that the Oak tree fell and was chopped to bits but would it have matter to anyone if it was an Oak in some forest that was chopped to clear some space for some rich guys house or for that desk that you sitting at, NO. Then what dose it matter life will go on at least for a little, enjoy it because u should not because you have too.

I wish someone had thought of making nice bowls and other carved items from the tree and gave the public the opportunity to buy them. The Frank Lloyd Wright foundation does this when they have lost a tree and they have someone carve beautiful items for sale.

Will they find the tapes that Nixon buried, underneath the softened soil and root system of the Elm tree?

Yes, let's blame the environment on George Bush. Why don't you go on ahead and blame the fact that you can't get up in time to go to work on George Bush? What about when you're car won't start? Blame it on George Bush. What about when Blockbuster doesn't have your favorite season of "Queer as Folk"? Blame it on George Bush. I think that you should take some time to educate yourself before joining you're little "let's blame everything on George Bush" bandwagon.

DOES THIS MEAN THE FIRST DOG WILL HAVE TO "HOLD IT" UNTIL THEY PLANT A NEW TREE? IF HE GOES ANYWAY DOES THAT EFFECT THE GLOBAL WARNING?

Our family had the opportunity to take a tour of the White House Gardens two weeks ago. We were proud to be standing where so much of our American History has been made. Part of that history is now gone. Our past presidents and their families have enjoyed those gardens. No matter what our political beliefs are we must remember we are Americans. As such the White House and its history is part of our history

I had never read anything quite like these comments, or seen a website where people wrote things in such a manner...is this a "blog"? And if so, why are so many comments so poorly spelled? Does the improper use of words (such at "to" instead of "too") tell us something about the writers? I think it may. And I sometimes despair over the state of grammar, spelling, and language usage in general. Too bad about the tree, by the way. I too hope someone uses the wood to make a fitting memorial.

OK - I guess Diann gets away with calling me "negative" when she's the one barking about people exercisizing their Constitutionally gaurenteed FREEDOMS being "stupid," and I guess it's OK - you can't let these turn into the pissing contest someone else mentioned.
I appreciate the opportunity to air my views.
