Capital landscaping

A tree toppled at our house last night. It lay still and dormant, its branches no longer full of happy congregations. This isn't back at the Kretman home in a Washington suburb, but at the house I work at for NBC News --- the White House. The tree -- a 140-year-old American Elm with a history that goes back into the 19th century -- survived rain, snow and political winds nearly all the way back to Abraham Lincoln. Limbs from its likeness appear on the back of the $20 bill.
Today, U.S. National Park Service employees busily performed the last acts -- cutting off branches and the trunk, lugging them away in big dump trucks. It was sad to see the end of a living piece of American history -- a reminder that there is no immortality in Washington, D.C., especially at the White House.

Its seems that the White house and American media are more saddend by falling of an old tree than for all human deaths this Administration has casued.

Perhaps we can solve the war on terror by sipping tea with Osama, Saddam, and George. I mean they did send us an invite on 9/11!
P.S. Iraq was involved that is why Alqaida wants us out of There.

You are just a bad as the Roman Senate. Caesar says "I am doing such and such for the glory of the Empire and the Republic." A Senator replys "No, you're doing this for personal glory." Daggers drawn out and they kill Caesar. Not much has changed in republics in two thousand years.

I read all this stuff that is written regarding a tree. The real world revolves around more important things. It is sad anytime when part of our history is destroyed; whether it is a tree, elm or redwood, etc, a building, an ideal, or our Constitution. We all have the freedom to yammer about a tree and find fault with every aspect of American life. While we all sit comfortably at our computers, spewing sarcasm, jabs, digs, humor or whatever; the world still turns. My friend returns today in a flag draped coffin. He was the real deal. His days were not filled with hours at a computer spewing sarcasm, jabs or digs. He made a committment and he made the ultimate sacrifice; so we can freely while away the hours talking about rain soaked soil that uprooted a beautiful tree and talk smack about a government that some don't have the enternal fortitude to join and truly make a difference.

Amasing how many people find a way to turn a 140 year old tree falling over into a political discussion. If this tree was in your own backyard not a word would have been said. I think that its just to bad that people have to find the a negative about everything in life instead of remembering all the good memories that tree had brought to many millions of people who traveled to the white house.

Last time I checked...you were still driving around this country in a ...wait for it.....VEHICLE!!!! Hmm....I think that you should be to blame for the poisonous enviroment!!!

will the tree being gone allow W to see the light?

"Bart" of Newport News, VA also voiced my first thoughts (which were refreshingly non-political): the Whitehouse and NPS should consult a mill and woodworker to convert the elm into chairs, tables, frames, even small collectible items as permanent pieces of history...before it is turned into mulch.

A tree fell because of all the rain in DC. But hey, if the Bushwhackers want to use it as an other lame ass excuse to attack Bush, let them. It just shows that they only have an imagination in coming up with these pithy remarks and not any real solutions to the problems they say Bush created.

Does anyone see a connection between the Elks Lodge collapse, the tree falling in front of the Whitehouse and the flooding? Perhaps the upstairs admin is sending a message?

" Weren't we talking about A TREE!"
Yes - a tree in front of the office of a man who thinks the way to prevent forrest fires is to clear cut the national forrests, and the authority to make it happen.
Clearly, the tree was a partisan that committed suicide in an act of asymetrical warfare.

The Bush supporters just have no idea how to counteract what the others say, so that they tell people to get a life. Get an argument, you Bushies!

It turns out I can't spell either K.Ellis. I spelled global "warning" instead of global "warming". I guess that was Bush's fault too. No let me blame that on "glabal warning". There's enough "Bushwacking" going on. Or was it "Treewacking"...

If a tree falls at the White House and the Republicans are too deaf to hear it...does it makes a sound?
(Sent Jun 27, 2006 5:01:51 PM)
YEs. I did write Glabal warming. Get over it. I can spell any way I want to! Even badly.
(I can't believe Bush made me spell bad...)

Yes Lee, and my sarcasm was BECAUSE of the ignorant submissions. God forbid someone write,"Wow, that tree was THAT old?" It's really too bad it finally fell." Too much garbage about Ironies and God, Glabal Warming & George Bush. Are you thankful I do not have an acyive email because I did not "rabble rabble" with a liberal point of view? State a fact, not emotion. I too am sorry for the editor of this page. All this ever is, is a forum for similar minded people to agree with each other about whatever they can blame on the President today. It's boring and ridiculous. I am not sorry I did not list my email, so that people like you can email me whining that I don't agree with you. There is nothing wrong with sarcasm, especially when it puts a light on stupidity.
Wow, that was an old tree, was beautiful too. How sad it fell.

I, for one, have been enjoying every one of these posts. As for the elm, a little more sunshine on the White House is a good thing. Keep smiling!

You must read some extremely stupid submissions, judging from the pathetic sarcasm and graveyard whistling that gets posted.
Thanks for the forum.
I'd like to thank K. Ellis for not having an active email link.

I guess if a tree falls in the yard(s) of some of these people who have posted these comments, it is because they are as much fools as they say Bush is.
(Sent Jun 27, 2006 3:53:43 PM)
Lot of ironies here. Maybe this is a time for all Americans to stop and think about what's happening in the United States and around the world.

Some of you REALLY need jobs and something better to do with your time than to blame a tree falling at the white house, on George Bush OR Global warming. It's raining. Alot. This happens, even back when Global warming wasn't a problem...you know, when the Democrats were in office, right. Right? I mean, natural disasters NEVER happen then, because it's George Bush's fault. I can't believe god is that mad at him, like someone said. Too bad he was so mad at Indonesia during the Tsunami. Or the earthquakes in India! Damn them and their technical phone skills! OH! Katrina was Bush's fault, I forgot. Damn him and his poor levvee making skills AND that hurricane dance he seems to do during the summer. OH! it was an OLD tree? Hmm. Because I really think George Bush made the tree fall on my car back in 1995. Damn him and his evil tree puppetry! Oh my god I have to go! My trees are moving, and it's raining. ALOT. Is that Global warming I see in the distance?? OH NO!! It's getting closer! Any moment now! Any moment.... coming right for me , I'll just wait here for it...

Maybe this will be a good opportunity for Pat Robertson to claim God is paying back the US Govt for tolerating the gay and lesbian community or...trying to ammend the constitution to deprive certain US citizens of life, liberty, and THE PERSUIT OF HAPPINESS. I don't really believe God takes sides, by the way. He created the trees first then the dinosaurs from whome we enjoy our oil.
