Busy Wednesday
Everything is a bit compressed for us this afternoon, as it is for our colleagues at ABC News. How do I know this? Because we spent the middle portion of the day together at a luncheon here at 30 Rock for the Committee to Protect Journalists -- a vitally important organization that was founded 25 years ago. For all the wrong reasons, CPJ's work has never been more important. Exactly 100 news people have been killed so far in the Iraq war... that number includes journalists, photographers, drivers, "fixers"... all the people who make it possible for us to do our jobs overseas. It is incumbent on those of us in this "new generation" in these wonderful jobs to keep the spirit, mission and funding of CPJ alive and vital. As I said earlier to the gathering of print and television journalists who responded to the invitation to today's lunch (from Tom Brokaw, yours truly and NBC News President Steve Capus), we are all keenly aware that we could instantly become CPJ clients... during any one of our foreign trips, at any time.
We also hosted a crew from ZDF, the German television network, during our afternoon editorial meeting, as part of a series they are doing on America's major cities -- and New York as a media hub.
To the broadcast: terrorism will start us off. The pieces are still in play, due to some breaking news and "police activity" as it's called here in New York. Obviously, the news out of Canada forms the backdrop for today's coverage as it has for the last several nights.
As you may know from this space, our re-airing of Richard Engel's piece last night (see the response to his post in Blogging Baghdad) was as emotional as the first go-round... and so many have asked about the possibility of adoption that we feel compelled to explain it yet again tonight, while pointing people to some hard information. We'll also have some "active duty reaction" to the latest information-sharing nightmare out of the Pentagon tonight and much more.
It is so good to see photos of Kimberly Dozier alive. It is even better to see photos of Kimberly Dozier coming home. I've been doing what everyone who has ever met her has been doing of late: replaying my last day with her, my last conversation with her, which happened to be in Mosul, Iraq. We took a ton of photos with some great soldiers who promptly e-mailed them, beaming smiles and all, to the folks back home. We went our separate ways after that, and I've been left to follow her work on television and radio. Now I follow her recuperation just like everyone else, knowing full well that she would want the attention put instead on the families of her two crew members who were killed, and on the family of the young American soldier whose life was stolen from him that day.
We hope you can join us for tonight's broadcast.

Of course NBC thought Ann Coulter was over the top, afterall she attacked liberal victims. I was just wondering though, wasn't the NY Comptroller who said he wanted to see Chuck Schumer put a bullet between the eyes of the President over the top? I didn't see NBC or Brain Williams do a lot of hand wringing over this. I guess that was different and wasn't newsworthy enough to do a whole story on. I was also wondering why in the hit piece of Ann Coulter you didn't bring up the fact that the Wall Street Journal had done a similar article on the Jersey Girls two years ago? Again, I guess it wasn't important at the time. The liberal double standard, you have to love it!

Thanks for calling attention to the lies and hatred of Ann Coulter. She is one of many right wing celebrities that are part of the supreme force behind our political situation. Anybody who questions the right wing is slandered and destroyed. Followers of the right wing celebrities are continously misinformed about the facts surrounding current issues.
Those who create the lies and hatred have seldom been examined or questioned by the mainstream media, who by the way, the right wing slanders too and is out to destroy. In fact, the cable news often has the right wing propagandists on as guests and treats them like gifted experts on the latest events.
I hope NBC will continue to show the courage to point out the lies, hatred, and impact of right wing propaganda.

Brian-
Thank you for your comments at the end of last night's broadcast concerning Ann Coulter's comments. It *is* time someone said 'enough', and I'm glad you, as one of the preeminent members of the 'main stream media', did. A return to civility is what's needed, and her comments are about as far from civil as one can get. Conservative commentary is fine, and I have no problem with those of any political stripe opining on an issue, but the vitriol from all quarters needs to stop. Thanks for adding your voice.

That's good news about Kimberly Dozier--I wish her a speedy recovery.
Thanks for the excellent in-depth report last night on corruption involving California Rep. Jerry Lewis. That was wonderful--that evil sleazeball deserves everything that's coming to him. I hope he ends up losing his House seat--or at least his position as Chairman of the House Appropriations Committee.
Here's why: According to a Mar. 8 report in the Times-Picayune, Lewis, as Chairman of that committee, stripped from the House's version of the Appropriations Bill Congress is now (hopefully, after 4 months) working on President Bush's request for $4.2 billion in housing aid specifically for Louisiana. Instead, Lewis left the funds up for grabs so that the "Axis of Greed"--Texas and Mississippi--could get their sticky fingers on them. Both states' Congressional delegations wield considerably more clout than Louisiana's, so this is a real problem for her. Essentially, Lewis did this dirty trick in spite of the fact that Louisiana needs the money far more than do Texas and Mississippi--hardest-hit by the storms, she suffered more damage in the New Orleans neighborhood of Gentilly than was sustained in the entire state of Texas.
Please stay on the Rep. Jerry Lewis story--it would be great to see him get his come-uppeance.

yes, i agree this is a noteworthy cause, and even further proof of the need to reduce class size. My wife as taught elementary school in california for 20 yrs, and the lack of parent involvement in scholictic, social, and behavioral guidence is the reason for boomers to be so effective in helping children to read.

Mr. Williams,
Thank you for stating that some things are still sacred, such as losing one's spouse in the worst act of terrorism our country has ever faced. Coulter is either the most obtuse person in the world or the most obdurate. I suppose she has never lost anyone close to her, which would allow her to empathize somewhat to the pain that these widows (witches/harpies, as she called them) must have gone through. Worse yet, this vitriol may only be for the purposes of getting people to put money in her pockets, which is unconscionable. Does anyone else see the terrible hippocracy here? Coulter is bashing these widows for having a political view and using the platform they have been given to express their opinions on matters THAT AFFECT THEM DIRECTLY, (see 9/11 Commission) yet she finds it perfectly acceptable to give her own two cents from her own soapbox and profit directly from it.
This woman has gone too far. How do we silence the mouth that roared? By not allowing her to profit from her actions. Money drives this woman. I suggest walking past her books at Barnes and Noble and changing the channel when she appears on the television screen.
There were so many good reports tonight, I'm sorry that I had to focus on this woman's hate.

Dear Brian,
Thank you for your continued great work. As a single, working mom I jump thru hoops to have dinner ready so I can watch catch your broadcast. And I'll confess, more than once I've delayed dinner so I can watch. My 7 year old now refers to you on a first name basis. But that's okay, she's learning from the best that what happens in her country and around the world daily is important and that we're not the only ones on the planet.
You should also know that although I've enjoyed watching Katie over the years, I won't be jumping ship!
Most sincerely,
Linda Robak

Not to seem too unfeeling I have to tell you that I am far less sympathetic for injured and killed journalists than I am to injured and killed US Military service members. Journalists literally force their way into situations of grave danger where US Military service members have no choice but to follow orders. I am really tired of the extensive coverage of downed journalists – they bought the ticket, took their chance and lost. It is as simple as that.
