Where are all the wanted men?

Today's Pentagon briefing on how the U.S. almost caught al-Qaida No. 2 Ayman al-Zawahiri raises issues about the whereabouts of other wanted al-Qaida members, as do Zacarias Moussaoui's comments today at his sentencing.

Here's what the U.S. government thinks they know about Osama bin Laden, Zawahiri and al-Qaida's leader in Iraq, Abu Musab al-Zarqawi:

1. Bin Laden is believed to be staying put, rather than moving constantly. The belief is that he spends his time in one location and not with an entourage that would attract attention. He is believed to travel with at least one of his four wives, a Yemeni woman he married in 2001 when she was 17, younger than several of his older children.

2. Bin Laden's security is provided mainly by Uzbek and Chechen fighters who form rings of protection.

3. Zawahiri, on the other hand, does move, mostly in Pakistan. He and Bin Laden have not traveled together since mid-2003 for security reasons. Prior to that they did. Obviously, the U.S. has tried to kill him on more than one occasion, as he has admitted.

4. Next level people [like former No. 3 Abu Faraj al-Libi] operate mainly in Pakistan. In choosing locations, they look for friendly compounds within a few miles of the Afghan border. They prefer locations with multiple access [mountain passes] to the border. They often travel with their families.

5. The top officials move mainly on foot and on motorcycles, even mopeds, rather than convoys of vehicles which can attract attention and show up on JSTARS radars. (Prior to 9/11, Bin Laden traveled in a Mitsubishi Pajero. The next level guys used Toyota pickups.)

6. Zarqawi, more often than not, travels alone and on mopeds.

7. They communicate through a network of couriers carrying electronic media, specifically "thumb drives," the tiny, inexpensive, cigarette lighter-sized hard drives that can contain more than a gigabyte of data -- documents, audio, video, etc. -- and can easily be slipped into a pocket during an embrace.

Yes, Bob, "What fools these bloggers be," indeed.

Sad fact: Osama is easier to believe than Bush. It's not that we'd RATHER believe him, it's that he's more believable, but that in NO WAY should be taken as a reflection on credibility of the President of the United States of America, or any of his flying monkeys.

The one thing nobody has said is all the weapons that Zarqawi is pictured using are American weapons. The machine gun he is pictured using is a M249 Squad Automatic Weapon. This means that it was taken off the corpse of an American Soldier. The Weapons his men are using are M-4s with M203s. These weapons have the American sight components on them, meaning these too were taken off of dead American soldiers. This does not show incompetence, but an enemy familiarizing themselves with US weapons. That is the point of Zarqawi's message, analyst have blown it big time with this video.

Many of you want us to go into Pakistan and capture OBL. Well, sounds nice but Pakistan is "nuclear" armed so they get a little more respect than Iraq or Afganistan.
As far as al-Zarqawi not being able to use a SAW. Most 3,4,5 star generals couldn't do it just right either. It's called "publicity" stupid.

I hope when the USA finds and kills Osama Bin Laden, they find a place in the sand unmarked and with out any fanfare or media they bury him. So He won't be made a martyr or a hero to his people.
We the people don't need to know everything. The worst thing that can happen for the USA is for OBL to be captured and brought to the USA to stand trial.

Bush made a deal with Osama, we will never see him in chains.

I have a suggestion. How about we hire the Israeli Moussad to find all those wanted people for us. They did a really nice job on the 12 people behind the killings at the Olympic Games in Munich. Apparently they know how to find people.

latest video tape (with the jammed gun), did anyone notice the guy who helped unjam it? His skin was very pale. European?

When Clinton wanted to go after Bin Laden, the Republicans complained loudly saying, "No war for Monica."

I say that we send the show: Americas Most
Wanted and see if they can find them.

Or.........a pack of unwanted pit bulls with tracking collars.

We can only guess at the real reason Bin Laden and others have not been caught. Allowing ? him to remain uncaught (he will never be free) provides the intelligence community a valuable tool to trace the flow of influence (money, political, Ideology, etc...) of Bin Laden and his followers. My theory, he is actually hurting his own cause by remaining uncaught. Occam's Razor basically states that the simplest reason is the best, maybe we just do not know...

Seems strange to me that we can get Sadam but we can't get Osama. Our guys just haven't been given the backing they need to do the job.

Has anyone ever heard of the phrase "The buck stops here"? Bush is the president, it's his fault that Bin Laden hasn't been captured - period. It's amazing that a man using Stone Age technology can escape the most technologically advanced force in human history.

I wonder amoung all this talk, did Osama go home to mama (saudi arabia) when Qandahar fell?

Bin Laden won't be found till we go into Pakistan ourselves and stop relying on the Pakistani army. Pakistan has received massive debt relief from the USA and is no doubt profitting in numerous other ways with the Americans unable to go in and do the job themselves. Why in the world would they want Bin Laden caught when it posses a threat to their meal ticket once he is caught??... I realize our intelligence in the region is bad [Thank you Clinton for the CIA scale down] and it is finding a needle in the proverbial haystack ; but when Pakistani intelligence is working against us and for their own benefit there will never be ANY sort of closure on Bin Laden.

well, it all starts when then President Bill clinton, in a diplomatic move to ease tension in sudan, then relealed him to afghanistan, and we know what followed. however , clinton ad 3 chances to take out and didn't- now we are all on higher alert. in my opinion, no clinton, no 9/11

It's sad testimony that our government has been unable...or unwilling...to hunt down bin Laden, but they're all about spending billions to spy on their own citizens in this country. Anyone who voted for these idiots should be ashamed of themselves. America's suffering at the hands of an incompetent administration and a spineless, corrupt Republican-led Congress is incalculable. Throw these bums out in November and get our guys out of that hell hole NOW.

I think you will see Bin Laden captured right around election time....

I would like to know why US Special Forces have been completely unable for four years to go after these guys wherever they are hiding. Isn't that the whole purpose of having special forces?
Are "Uzbek and Chechen fighters" so formidable they
can completely neutralize Donald Rumsfeld's vaunted
"transformed" military and all it's resources?
Richard Clarke had the Clinton Defense Department find Osama bin Laden himself with
Predator drones at least twice so what is Rumsfeld's excuse?

I see so many comments that just blame President Bush, but don't give him credit where it's due. I ask this question: If 68% of americans do not approve of the job he is doing, does that mean that 68% approve of the job he is not doing?

Well, I'm sorry Mr. Wasson, but you are defending Zarqawi and making ridiculous excuses for him. You're obviously not credible in the least. I'm sure Zarqawi has seen US weapons, French weapons, Russian weapons, and more. I'm sure this isn't the first time he has even fired a SAW. The fact of the matter is that he should be embarassed and I'm sure he is. I mean, how can you be recruited if the guy trying to recruit you can't even fire a simple machine gun. News flash Mr. Wasson, machine guns carry many similarities. It doensn't take a genius who has fired any type of machine gun to figure out how to fire another one. Other than that, it's just point and shoot. It's not like they're asking him to strip it and put it back together. Nice try Mr. Wasson. Next time, pick someone else to support.

What fools these bloggers be. I've heard enough of your conspiracy BS. I think you would rather believe Al Qaida than our President. How sadistic and harmful you Liberals have become. Sadly, the "drive by" media does not give you the whole story. Perhaps you should read about some these Military units that are trying to capture these rats. Oh forget it, you wouldn't believe that either.

This administration can't go after Bin Laden, because too much money (oil) exchanged hands between their family and Cheney & Bush. It's not hard to figure out.

All this talk is just another lie by our govenment. Look Bush still wants us to believe these guys are dumb but Bush is the dumb one. Our govenment can't face up to the fact that these guys are smart and laying crumbs just to laugh at how the military picks it up. Even channel 7 is reporting lies told and directed by Bush. Bush is making the United States the laughing joke to the world and the media is helping. Bin Ladin is right under their noses.

In reference to the U.S. Military released al-Zarqawi video intended to make him look like a bufoon. Well of course he does not know how to use it, it is not a weopon he would have training on. The weapon is an (probably captured) U.S. Military Weapon, an M249 Light Machine Gun, referred to as a Squad Automatic Weapon (SAW). He is, no doubt, only becoming familiar with it. Not to defend this terrorist, but a pretty poor attempt to embarrass an individual who has organized an extremely effective insurgency against the most powerful military in history. The story is not his lack of knowledge of the weapon, but the the use of the video as propaganda.

"We're going to hunt those folks down."*

Unless we can't find them, or want to keep them from speaking freely, or we want to keep a boogy man under your bed, or maybe we just don't know what the hell we're doing. In any event, Osama isn't important any more. Maybe we'll corner him, then turn the capture operation over to the same people he's been bribing for years. Who knows?
