The Daily Nightly from NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams

About this blog

The Daily Nightly began on May 31, 2005. As Brian wrote in his first post it aims to provide a narrative of the broadcast day and a window into the editorial process at NBC Nightly News. Brian weighs in every weekday and NBC News correspondents and producers post regularly.

Brian Williams became the seventh anchor and managing editor in the history of NBC Nightly News on December 2, 2004. Read his full biography.

Closer to home, here are some of the stories we are covering in the broadcast tonight. We begin with the stunning revelation today from the Veterans Affairs Administration that the Social Security numbers of 26.5 million veterans have been stolen. We'll have the details on how this happened and what all those veterans are supposed to do to try to protect their identities. Then the government's forecast for another busy storm season... as many as 10 hurricanes are expected this season, with between four and six of those expected to be major storms. And more worrisome given that forecast, there are new concerns about the levees in New Orleans. I'll have those stories from New York with Brian in Africa. See you tonight.

Last night's newscast had to have been one of the best--the most thought-provoking and stimulating--I've ever seen in some time. Bear with me if I'm a bit long.

First of all, the excellent piece about the report New Orleans' levees had been built on the cheap with design flaws, which not only was why several had failed during Katrina, but also gives cause for concern regarding those still standing. Combine that with the news about 2-3 weeks ago about the levees' not being ready in time for hurricane season, and yesterday's forecast of a busy season, and you have a nerve-wracking time for New Orleans.

I find somewhat disturbing the news on Louisiana Rep. William Jefferson and his "cold, hard cash"--or, to be more specific, its timing. This bugs me because when Louisiana is appealing to Congress for funds to rebuild New Orleans and upgrade the levees, it's not the time for one of her Congressmen (and the New Orleans one, at that) to be under investigation for bribery and corruption. As the nefarious doings of an individual who got greedy, this could have happened to ANY member of Congress from ANY state (example: California Rep. "Duke" Cunningham). So I'm concerned that, as happened after Katrina, some might unfairly brand Louisiana as "corrupt", which could adversely impact her ability to get the help she needs.

On to lighter, more upbeat things--I was happy to hear about those adorable penguins returning to the New Orleans aquarium and about Barbaro's recovery. That was cute--about him flirting with the mares.

And the touching scene at the end of the newscast with the 7-year-old African girl who was spending the afternoon cooking for her family--it really made me think when Brian wondered what a 7-year-old American girl might be doing at the same time of day. I imagine, most probably not cooking--unless maybe she was heating popcorn up in the microwave while watching TV.

Lastly, I understand you recently got married. This is somewhat belated, but Congratulations!

Brian and Campbell,
I enjoyed your co-hosted broadcast tonight very much.
Since Katrina, I notice a level of reporting that seems to me to contain a greater human and personal depth than I can ever recall. Kudos.
I have actually had tears in my eyes on more than one occasion watching NBC Nightly News, like tonight with the Africa reporting. I feel that you are consistently insightful and on target with world events, and frankly a call to action for all of us. Your recent focus on oil, energy, gas, Katrina, and now Africa, has been great (Perhaps more on Darfur??).
I think you have helped change my understanding of the world and belief systems for the better. Thank you!
Also, I see great things in Campbell Brown's future. She is breaking new, exciting ground, and I hope she remains a mainstay of the NBC Nightly News team.
She seems to be endearing, a great journalist, and who just happens to be stunningly beautiful. Keep up the great work, Brian and Campbell!

The thief probably didn't know the value of the data on the computer. He does now.
