The Daily Nightly from NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams

About this blog

The Daily Nightly began on May 31, 2005. As Brian wrote in his first post it aims to provide a narrative of the broadcast day and a window into the editorial process at NBC Nightly News. Brian weighs in every weekday and NBC News correspondents and producers post regularly.

Brian Williams became the seventh anchor and managing editor in the history of NBC Nightly News on December 2, 2004. Read his full biography.

Bono & Brian head into Africa

It turns out the man who created Zoo TV and made mirror balls cool again is pretty at ease in front of a camera in Africa. After his performance last week at our afternoon editorial meeting (noted by Brian in his Friday post), we asked U2 front man Bono to tell our cameras why he's so inspired by the continent and raising millions of dollars and awareness to forgive debt, fight HIV/AIDS, and end poverty there.

Nn_bono_vlog_060521Click here to watch Bono's video blog from Tanzania. It's 3 minutes, 22 seconds, straight from the heart. For those of you who don't have Windows Media Player, I've included a transcript below.

Brian will join up with Bono Monday and travel to Abuja, Nigeria, and Bamako, Mali, as the humanitarian rock star assesses the progress of the relief organizations, DATA and ONE, with whom he is working in Africa. For more about the trip, including briefings about each country they will visit, click here.

TRANSCRIPT OF THE VIDEO BLOG
This is Bono here at the foot of Mount Kilimanjaro, if you can believe it, and I’m on NBC and that’s very cool. Let me tell you this, not every network has a camera crew trekking across Africa for the right reasons. And so I’m very pleased about being on NBC.

I’m a little worried about Brian Williams coming out next week. Uh, it is a bit of a worry because you know he thinks he’s cool and I’m going to take him to some very hot, sweaty places and we’re going to be real close and that, so I hope he’s prepared, because we are going to make him sweat. But I will introduce him to some very, very,  very cool Africans. And very cool things are happening in Africa, actually. It’s a whole new mood on this continent that really fight backs.

So for those people in the heart of America and the coasts of America who got us up and running, this is a message from the heart of Africa.

Since debt cancellation started, we have an astonishing statistic. There are 15 million more kids going to school since the "drop the debt" campaign. Since we got busy on HIV/AIDS, since President Bush’s historic AIDS initiative, 800,000 Africans are on these drugs.

When I was here, whenever it was, three or four years ago with the United States treasury secretary, there was none to speak of –- only wealthy people. Malaria, which is like the number one killer disease in the world, we’re going to chase that out of town with the right insecticides and bed nets. I think there is something like 5 million bed nets that have gone out since politicians in D.C. heard this was important.

So some very cool things happening. Africans are getting busy. Because there’s hope I suppose. And they’ve heard that you’re with them in this struggle. It’s a monumental struggle. We’ve seen some terrible things over there the last while and I guess we will the next week.

I had the most sickening experience watching people three in a bed, well actually six in a bed if you can imagine -- that’s in one hospital there in Rwanda. Three mothers, three children, same bed.

So there’s a lot to do. I don’t think we should take our foot off the gas or anything, rather I think we need to accelerate. But they love Americans here now and I’m in awe of what you’ve done, so let’s see what happens over the next week.

Over and out from Tanzania. Probably can’t see it over my head, it’s a big head, it could even block Mt. Kilimanjaro. But stay tuned (flashes the peace sign).

Praise the Lord brotheren and Glory be to him. Day and night since I lost wrote to you still no improvement on the lives of orphans in Africa still as they say and I say we are hoping that Ambassador Hope with her group hopeandcare International inc and prosperitystudios, will transform the live of orphans in Africa and all over the world. As a new orphans leader Across the continent I declare the war on the suffering masses ie the orphans and the sick are dying each and every day. Could sir Mr Bono be specific when exactly your extention of funding to the needs will be? which enetiatives have you made to make this possible.
Kagabo Mathias Orphans Leader Across Africa

Orphans in Africa are living in acritical condition and really they need your rescue, I am an orphan who lost both parents and I had no hope until I veiwed Ambassador gill hope on voice of America straigt talk Africa when she was promising to help and change the live of oprhans in africa, I wrote to her and she got June waller and Raleigh waller as my virtual parents, They took me back to school and I have just finished my 'O'level. I believe that if people become virtual parents too lives of orphans can be changed completely.

As a teacher, I believe the more we know about Africa and the more Africans know about the world, the better we will all be. Education is the key! So, both Bono and NBC news deserve kudos. Having said that, I am in need of an organization or individual to help fund the shipment of used World Geography textbooks (approximately 15, 50lbs boxes)to Books For Africa (website http://www.booksforafrica.org/)who will then distribute these to several nations in Africa. If interested, please email me at robin_grenz@scps.k12.fl.us. Thanks.

I am an African and I think what Bono is doing for Africa is very noble however in my veiw he needs to change his strategy and make the Africans less dependant on the richer nations. Africans do not need "hand outs" but rather jobs, they would feel more dignified in supporting their families from their own sweat so creating jobs I think is the way Bono should go for us Africans to better appreciate him.

Bono-I'm a firm believer that we are all here for a reason and hopefully we can find a positive outlet for that end. May the negative comments and thoughts of others not deter you in your great journey! God bless you and keep you safe.

Brian, let me be one of the few Nigerians to say welcome to Nigeria, and as we say in Yoruba (Western Part) "E Ka bo." You reply. "E se." Many thanks to Bono, who is trying to bring the plight of many African kids to the limelight, and many thanks to you as well for your courageous reporting.

Thank you Brian for going to Africa with Bono, media coverage is exactly what this issues needs. I just watched the Conan episode here in Finland (it's always a few days late) and really appreciated your words.

Bono, if you read the Birthday book, you know how I feel. Love and my utmost respect, I've learned so much from you.

Prosperity Studios are hosting a Celebrity Telethon on June 15th 2006 from 3pm-12 midnight PST at KCET Studios, Hollywood. We are expecting 2,000 celebrities and we are going live by webcam to the orphans from 53 African countries.

The Celebrities are mobilizing 6,000 fans to become Virtual Parents for the orphans who will live in their Childrens' Village. This is a great opportunity for Celebrities to transform their Fan Clubs into "Communities of Compassion in Action"

By the end of the telethon we expect to have 13 million compassionate people from around the world committed to supporting one orphan each. These children are the Human Assets of Africa and together we can ensure they are healthy, educated and loved.

Brian, we would love you to attend the telethon and any of your fans that want to volunteer to help can contact us by email. Thank you for raising the conciousness amongst the American people for how abundant they are and how important it is to the soul of America to respond to the needs of the orphans in Africa.

BONO, not only do you share your talents w/ your lyrics and song, but your awareness and humanitarian efforts make you the most thoughfull and amazing person. Most people in your situation , w/the acception of a few, become so effected by the "position" they have, but you have done nothing but give and make us all appreciate you and your cause, bringing AFRICA and its problems to the forefront. Thank you for all you do and have done and continue the fight.
God Bless you and all the countries in Africa

I was in Dallas for the Vertigo Tour, and i also drove back down to Dallas to see Bono speak at the WORLD AFFAIRS COUNCIL. There is a burden on his heart for Africa... as a Believer we should be helping the sick.. the poor.. those that need help... we can do it...thank you Bono for all that you are doing - God Bless You

Mr. Bono its great to see someone giving of himself to help others.I've heard you are a follower of Christ, how uplifting it is to see someone practicing what Jesus taught and how inspiring and encouraging to myself to step out trust God and do what He would want me to do where I'm at.I'll be praying that God will accomplish Great things through you and all those who are trying to help and serve there in africa and all over the world God Bless You.

Bono, what could I say about you and all the other people who have done so much for those who need our help. A mere thank you just never seems to be enough. I'm glad all these new campaigns have been created. I have been exposed to all that is going on in Africa, and I'm proud to say, I have become a sponsor in Saving Africa's Children. I wish I could do more, but unfortunatley I don't have those types of resources. It saddens me, but at least through all the coverage and campaigns, I've become a member to help and at least that's something, small though it maybe. Thanks so much Bono - ROCK ON!

Brian and NBC Night News has my deepest gratitude and respect for taking a news team to where Bono and the delegates are. as an American i'd be starved for information on this trip were it not for NBC news, and the blogs of ONE and reuters, then the DATA site itself. CNN covered the plane landing and stopped there, except for a blurb across the bottom at headline news.

My family has decided that this african trip is my own personal Vertigo Tour, concerning the issues important to me with the children i love in the "elipse." love and appreciation and prayers for safe travel and quality reporting and an inspirational week for all of you. and thanx again.

stay close,

What a good idea to give Africa some thought on national television. In al lot of respects we need a this. I hope it will be honest, though: Africa is not a continent only of hopeless, but a continent alive with possiblitiy, alive with resilient and creative and beautiful people, a continent of immense beauty, of rich and proud cultures. I hope respectful dialogue will follow this newscast.

I have never felt more intrigued by anyone else in the public eye! Bono....how can the world say "Thanks" for all that you do? With all of your incredible endeavors...the very least we can do is to join ONE. And for those of us who want to do more..we follow in your footsteps in helping mankind...whether in our backyard...or a world away! Thanks for being an example of human kindness, passion, and inspiration!

Bono doesn't need self promotion - he could buy an island (maybe even Ireland) and say "to hell with you morons," but he doesn't.

Maybe we should change our laws about foreign-born presidents, because I would take this guy over president Corporate Tool, ANY day.

I am not the least worried about Bono being in the spotlight - we all have mixed reasons for doing what we do. I applaud his efforts and say that you can put him up next to any celebrity and see how their lives are vastly contrasting. I would rather Bono be selfish for a "good" cause than selfish and end up in prison (when was the last time you saw a rapper involved in these endeavors?).

I was sincerely Blessed just reading and hearing about Mr Bono's heart for those precious people. May God in His abundant Grace, Bless and keep Mr Bono. I just pray more of us would be concern about people all over the world, regardless of the color of their skin, or how impoverished they may be. Thank you Mr Bono. And thanks to NBC for the coverage.

It never ceases to amaze me that people continue to think Bono does all this for less than noble reasons. Bono has been involved with worthy causes for well over 25 years whether it be GreenPeace, ending violence in Northern Ireland, AIDS, or debt relief. He has plenty of money, fame, and hit records. He doesn't need to be in the spotlight. He does what he does because he remains a life long learner who's been awaken to the open sore we call Africa. We can no longer sweep the pieces of this broken continent under the rug of Western society. Thank you Bono for lending your voice to those who cannot be heard.

Brian Thanks for helping with this. Bono we just can thank you enough. I have a dream....I dreamt that one day the African people will get the help they so desperately need, at first I thought this day would never come, but since Bobby Shriver, Jeff and Bono are together along with thousands more I now do have hope. Keep up with the great work lads. I've been volunteering myself for whatever I can to help - am I member of DATA, ONE and am so proud I joinned. America and the World is listenning...

It was a pleasure reading about Bono's work. I hope he can keep moving forward. We were working in Zambia and Zimbabwe this past November (http://www,tobelikehim.com) and will be back there in a few weeks. There is so much to be done and the people are so good hearted. Anything that can be done to help will be blessed.

To those criticizing Bono for self-promotion on this - take a second look. If his fame makes someone take notice initially for the wrong reasons, then they get involved for the right reasons - so be it. So I say - get over yourselves instead. I don't recall hearing him plugging his next album in any blogs on Africa. Real, quantifiable good is being done because of his efforts - check it out yourselves. I think Bono just wants to use his fame to get something positive done inthe world. Who can argue with that?

Thank you Bono for making the world wake up and realize that there are human beings dying by the thousands a day. Your love for all people has inspired me to become a better person. I have been a fan of U2 for over 25 years and you personally for your work outside the band. You deserve the utmost respect and recognition for everything you do. The One Campaign is one of the best organizations I belong to. Keep up the great work - The World is watching and listening. Stay safe - Peace

Bono needs to get over himself. Good idea, but it's too much about him. Forget how cool Bono would like you to think he is and think about the problem's themselves.

I'm thrilled to watch Bono and Bill & Melinda Gates take the lead on trying to end the extreme suffering in Africa. They are inspiring to me and my family...They are acting out true Christianity...THank you, we want to help too.
