Tonight on Nightly News

On this Sunday, there is new information about the price of gasoline. Energy Secretary Samuel Bodman indicated today that these high energy prices could be with us for another two or three years. Not good news for consumers, who are already upset about the latest round of price hikes. NBC's Kevin Corke has that story. Plus, NBC's Tom Costello tonight on why high fuel prices are taking their toll on some airlines.

Also... immigration. On the day before a national work boycott, immigrants are facing a big choice whether to walk off the job or work. NBC's James Hattori has the latest.

On the opening weekend "United 93" (a film from Universal) , NBC's Lisa Daniels went to theaters to find out what moviegoers think. Are they ready for one of the first fictional accounts of what happened on 9/11?

In Depth tonight, a consumer alert. There's new concern about a potential danger that could be lurking in those bags of lettuce you buy at the store. We'll have some important information tonight.

And last night at the White House Correspondents Dinner, the President was a big hit. That is... the President and a look-alike. We will have the highlights of the President's performance.

That's where we stand right now. We hope you'll join us tonight.

COMMENTS

Nice comments. As for Katrina well it much like Darfur the faces are the same and their poor so some Americans say who cares lets move on. But don't let African Americans not pay their taxes because then they become Americans again.
As for oil well thank goodness the oil companies let Bush know that they will be stealing fo 3 more years. Now we know just how long we will be robbed. Its the new way of the criminals they let you know how long they will steal from you. I guess the lies of Iran and the gulf didn't stand up as a lie again.
Americans don't mind being made fools of just as long as it doesn't effect them. Watch as this Administration digs into more and more freedoms and brings back the draft then you'll see all Americans with children want Bush out. When it only effects the lowing income people who cares. Americans now only think of themselves but they love their country but wont serve. They support a criminal as long as it doesn't effect them.

So some want the government to secure all oil fields within our sovereign boundaries. Who is going to work these oil fields . . . the same greedy corporations that control oil now! This would only delay by a few years the coming crisis. The problem is not oil or lack of oil. The problem lies with the consumers. Bigger houses, bigger cars, more, more, more.
If you want the same world for your children, we have to change the way we consume. I don't like the high gas prices either but that does not make me blind to the real problme.
Why should the people of the U.S. be allowed to squander 25% of the world's oil when we make up a much smaller percentage of the world's population?

Looks like with these gas prices, Granny ought to get her motorcycle out! My wife and I have obtained the two-wheelers in an effort to offset the need for transportation at higher prices. There are going to be more sales of motorcycles due to Bush's antics. Because dangers abound on merely bicycles as attested by our president's inability to balance on one, motorcycles may be the answer. Interesting that we can become one with Vietnam with all those scooters and small displacement motorcycles there, but if Bush wishes to gouge, maybe the answer is the motorcycle. Granny never had it as good!

Oil & Eminent Domain

The U.S. oil crisis could be resolved quite simply if the U.S. Government secured all oilfields within its sovereign boundaries, utilizing the precedent(s) established by the Supreme Court regarding eminent domain. It is certainly clear that Energy is a National Security matter, and no longer relegated to national markets, but rather international markets. Oil has evolved well beyond a purposeful commodity. Military prowess will someday be eclipsed by the necessities of function, rather than the advancements in capability. Furthermore, the capacity for reconstruction is vastly more dependent upon Energy, than manpower, goodwill, benefit concerts, and government coffers. It is time for the U.S. is get pre-emptive on Energy Management, and show the world how serious it is about this so called war on terrorism. It is time for the U.S. to put its own money where its mouth is, and secure its own oil fields instead of wasting precious State and Federal Military assets on foreign operations. Such hypocrisy will only escalate into the very extremisms that our U.S. Officials hope to prevent, continuing this the self-fulfilling evangelical prophecy.

Gas Prices are crippling low and middle income families. Another 2-3 years will be a disaster! The public is at the mercy of big oil business that run it like a monopoly. And they should invest their huge profits in alternative energy of the future? I think not! They will have a monopoly in it as well and treat the public the same way! The public will lose again! Saudi Arabia is lowering its gas prices at the pump by 25 cents approx and they will pay about 60 cents a gallon! What is our Government doing for the people that can least afford these prices. And the oil price isn't just about gasoline. It affects our natural gas and electricity prices too! Maybe we should all join the immigrant strike to protest the high oil prices, too. Our problem in the USA isn't a shortage of oil but rather a surplus of greedy corporate execs. Dump the oil stocks, conserve energy, and vote out the politicians that can't recognize what an average American needs. If we keep it up, we won't have a problem with immigration, Americans will export themselves!

WOW!!! You actually did a whole episode where Katrina was not mentioned. I loved it! I'm not saying to forget about the victims of Katrina, but it is VERY nice to not hear about it every single day.
