The Daily Nightly from NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams

About this blog

The Daily Nightly began on May 31, 2005. As Brian wrote in his first post it aims to provide a narrative of the broadcast day and a window into the editorial process at NBC Nightly News. Brian weighs in every weekday and NBC News correspondents and producers post regularly.

Brian Williams became the seventh anchor and managing editor in the history of NBC Nightly News on December 2, 2004. Read his full biography.

Our Thursday lineup

One of the bravest men who ever lived... has died.  In one of the great perversions of justice, the man who first flew the X-15 and first broke the mach 2 barrier... has died in a single-engine small plane in Georgia.  Scott Crossfield was 84 years old.  It is safe to assume that none of the controllers or fellow aviators who heard the radio transmissions from his last flight realized that they were hearing the voice of an aviation legend for the last time.  We will remember him tonight.

At the top of the broadcast, the visit of the President of China.  It was an odd day at the White House, filled with meaning.  From the heckler/journalist to the fact that it was less than a State visit, but more than the usual South Lawn arrival ceremony.  David Gregory will explain the moving parts and the talks between the two men.  We'll also look at the testimony today at the Moussaoui trial, and we'll have updates on two rolling stories we've been following: the storm zone and soaring executive compensation.  We have an interesting story on distracted drivers tonight (as they say, a funny thing happened while we were taping this story) and we'll close it out with a fascinating look at "old Hollywood."  The key seems to be: look fast.  It’s disappearing.  Josh Mankiewicz will tell the story tonight.

We've been following the Air Force One hoax video story on the web...but we chose NOT to pursue it for Nightly News tonight, as we just don't know enough beyond an interesting yarn.  To the untrained eye, it sure looked like a bold move.  The trained eyes of aviation buffs spotted a phony a mile away.

We're thinking of Betty Ford today, who is hospitalized in California.

I hope I will be forgiven if I disappear for a day tomorrow.  Allow me to ask that you extend every viewing courtesy to my friend Lester Holt, and I will be back in the chair on Monday.

We hope you can join us for our Thursday edition.

Mister Williams, I have a great respect for you.

Why not follow the Air Force One defacement hoax? It's really just a statement of dispair. The author feels disenfranchised - as do most Americans.... at this time. Increasingly, our "government" does not listen to the "will" of the people or pay attention to their constitutional rights. It is a relevant story and one that I hope is picked up by the mainstream press.

In a lighter vein today, I hope there's a verdict soon in the Moussaoui trial. I'm getting sick of seeing his ugly face--I'm surprised wasn't on the list of the 100 unsexiest men in the world. I think it would improve his looks if someone painted a target on his big bald head. As for his buddy Richard Reid (a.k.a. "Shoebomber") he should also have been on that list--he looks like he could use a flea collar.

i know i'll remember every detail of the story if janet is on it
