New Orleans, 8 months later

The broadcast originates live from New Orleans tonight. We'll look at how far the city has come and how much further the region has to go. Will the levees be ready in time for this year's hurricane season?

Thank you Brian for true journalism. You continue to cover the most important story of the year: Katrina. New Orleans and its people are too important to dismiss. They are Americans; they are one of us--not a foreign country. This disaster is on American soil. We help everyone else--why not help our own. Should we quit covering the Iraq story? The gas story? etc. This is news and very important news for all of the nation. I would have never believed the lack of governmental response had we not seen the mess with our own eyes. This could be any town any where in the US. New Orleans never could have dreamed life would be so difficult in the US. Most Americans have appreciated your continued support and coverage of the destruction. As for the North Dakota residence, what a shame. I hope North Dakota never needs the assistance of its fellow Americans.

Blame, Blame, Blame! From the bottom to the top everyone acted irresponsibly. It started when Mayor Nagin and the governor of Louisiana acted irresponsibly by not having a plan to help the people in need get out of the city, but their mistakes are just a drop in the bucket compared to the the mistakes made by the higher ups, before and after Katrina. If the levee system had been funded for maintenance the wall would not have broken. The Corps of Engineers, funded by the federal government, is responsible for maintaining the levee system. The money was shelved in Washington year after year. The incompetance and blunders, of President Bush, FEMA, Homeland Security, and any other higher ups made this tragedy, and continue to make this tragedy even eight months later, unbelievable in the most powerful country in the world. It's time to get New Orleans back together. The destruction is far beyond what the people alone can repair, and you would have to be an idiot to believe otherwise. This city should not be forgotten, and for someone to say that Brian Williams should move on to current news is downright embarrassing. Tell that to the hundreds of thousands of people from New Orleans and the surrounding areas that lost, overnight, their jobs, their income, their homes, all their possesions, their friends, their family members, and life as they knew it. Remember folks, we're talking about a major city in the U.S.A. not a foreign country. Perhaps Louisiana should withdraw from the Union and become it's own country. Then perhaps the taxpayers and Congress wouldn't think twice about sending what it needs to rebuild this great city.

I am appalled at the lack of compassion I read in some of these emails about the situation in New Orleans. Yes, the topic has been beaten to death in the media. But that doesn't change the situation. New Orleans is still a mess and is sitting at the front door of a new hurricane season. Why are we so ready to condemn and be negative towards the situation? Why can we not lend a helping hand to our fellow American? Our fellow man? Instead of spending time griping about the oversaturation of the New Orleans plight by the media, send a donation to a trustworthy charity doing work in New Orleans. Even better, get your backside down there and start pitching in to help clean up and rebuild. That is a big part of what is wrong in this world today. Too many selfish people and not near enough kindness and understanding.

Please go visit the New Orleans area and then write negative comments about the recovery effort. These are American people who deserve much from the government since the government is the one who caused this tragedy. The devestation is overwhelming, unimaginable, and REAL. GO SEE for yourself and then decide if these people deserve more than blame and shame. Why don't people volunteer their services and hardwork rather than their opinions?

Regarding the negative comments from those who do not wish to hear about the progress of rebuilding the Gulf or who do not consider this timely news, how can you turn your back on your neighbors, your countrymen and if we the people do not monitor the progress or lack there of how can we hold our government responsible. Shame on your lack of humanity, lack of patriotism and lack of civil responsibility.

It is a shame when I have to look a my favorite evening news and be in tears. I am a resident of New Orleans currently living in Houston not by choice. The lack of compassion from those e-mails that you aired are mind blowing. The only thing that I can say is walk in my shoes, please walk in my shoes. I grieve daily for a city that I can not return to right now. I can only speak for myself, but if this ever happens to you even after all the ugly things that I have read and been told you will still be welcome at my home, if you are thirsty I still will give you water, and if you are hungry I will feed you.

Brian
I think you are doing a supper job reporting on the aftermath of Katrina disaster in New Orleans and Mississippi. Keep it going. We shall never forget what happen in these two cities. Ignore all the negative comments. It is people like you who make the world a better place for all.

Blame Bush bla bla bla. Do you use that thing on your shoulder for anything but a hatrack. I am from the New Orleans area. The leftest media has blamed Bush, FEMA, and Brown. The truth (if you can bear it) is, the mayor of the city failed to evacuate the people in a time. Secondly, they who could not evacuate were not supplied with three days of food and water as per every emergency hurricane plan states. Thirdly, the president and congress have given $80,000,000,000 to disaster relief (can you count that many zeros). Finally, an additional 26,000,000,000 was approved at the end of 2005.

Does it really matter now? Katrina may have done poor New Orleans in but it was W. who finished it off with his non-plused fix-up and apparent mess-up of New Orleans and adjacent vicinity. With FEMA looking like it will be axed and revamped, it is the perfect charade for this administration to hide behind. Bush, to no one's surprise, is not a socialist. He doesn't like spending money on the poor and disenfranchised, even when disaster occurs. So, it will be up to the states in general to make repairs which will be slow and dodgey. Will the levees be up for this year's hurricane season? Does it really matter?
