Diplomacy over a meal

It may sound strange, but the only way the President thinks he can forge any kind of relationship with Chinese President Hu Jintao is over a meal. When Mr. Bush went to China last fall, he said he wanted to spend more time getting to know what this enigmatic figure running a country of 1.3 billion people really thinks. Hu's response: Let's talk at dinner.

Fast forward to today's rather awkward White House meeting -- again the two leaders had their most heart to heart moments at lunch. The formal meetings, you see, are attended by too many aides. Even the one-on-one meeting has 12 people I'm told.

Today, most of Mr. Bush's job was keeping smoke from coming out of Hu's ears.

If you watched TV at all today, you saw a protester from the spiritual group Falun Gong slipped into the White House today as a reporter (she's been here before in fact) and proceeded to shout at Hu during his remarks. The gaffe was a major embarrassment for the White House and a major irritant to China. The Chinese negotiated every detail with the administration to make sure Hu was greeted as a full U.S. partner -- an equal on the world stage. And then this.

This was a visit about images today. The Chinese took care of that. Back home, the protester getting all the coverage in this country was never seen on Chinese television.

Bush is performing the Limbo Poll! How low can he go!

It is about respect.

Bush has none for anyone but himself.(And I think he is in doubt at that).
We (everyone else in the world) have no respect for Bush.(Or our current government)

Hu certainly knew who was important when he made the itinerary, seeing Bush last.

Just the fact that Bush holds no respect with most of todays leadership around the globe should be reason enough for removal from office.

If you were a coach, and had the loss record and respect that Bush holds, they woulda tossed you years ago.

David, I’m a big fan.

The woman who interrupted Chinese President Hu Jintao has a name. She is Wang Wenyi and she's 47 years old. Why do reporters not identify her by name? Why is she "the Chinese woman"?

Her protest is protected under the First Amendment. It's odd that in this country there is not more compassion for a person pleading for greater respect for human rights.

If the White House charges her with crimes, I hope the mainstream media does its job and calls OUR Federal government for suppressing free speech.

Imagine if this thing had been fully anticipated by the White House, allowing a heckler into the press corp so as to harass Hu, how little this episode has any legs as if this could cause umbrage to the Chinese! So, Mr. bush was not the first visitor to be seen by the Chinese president as if this has any calamitous notion one way or the other. Much ado about nothing!, me thinks!

I was appalled (maybe somewhat naive) to hear TV reporters at CNN state that this protest was an embarrassment to President Bush. Then this stated vernacular was repeated by most of the major cable networks at the news hour. They dismiss our rights as Americans to voice consent as if it should be a crime. The protestor does have a name Wang Wenyi, 47, a reporter for The Epoch Times, a New York-based newspaper that supports the Falun Gong.

President Bush should have taken the opportunity to let Hu reply to her protest dealing with the Falun Gong. The Falun Gong is a method of meditation and spiritual wholeness that is outlawed in China. It is similar to Tai Chi that is practiced in the US. People in China have been executed for their beliefs in this religion. The government has craked down severely sinse 1999. This is truely a human rights issue and this protestor has brought it to the surface. We should embrace her protest as it speaks directly to oppression of freedom of Religion in China.

Again, it is unfortunate that the media cannot find pause and research this a little rather than speculating on what the visit has produced...which is nothing of any substance reported so far. If President Bush had a trade policy that was fair and equitable to US business concerns, we would be in a far better economical position which in turn would help our small and medium size business's trade with countries like China. This helps no one but China's position and large Corporate business. More outsourcing anyone?

So what's new with the heckler/journalist? I thought all journalists were hecklers. Or should that be all hecklers are journalists?

the Chinese seem to deal with dissent with an iron fist, it would be good if our President dealt with this person speaking out with some manner of reasonable logical dialogue. In this way, we might show how being an open society is much better than being a society that turns off the opportunity for reasonable speech.

David you know it was a set up to show President Hu Jintao that the White House didn't like him going to Gates and starbucks and making Bush last on the list. The White House wasn't fooling anyone with this trick. Other world leaders will now push some of the Bush man's bottoms. China will take over the leadership held by the United States. Thanks to George W. Bush the United States is no longer respested or trusted by the world and Americans.

The Chinese president comes to America with all the cards while Mr. Bush has few he can play other than wordly statesman(?)! In a game of Texas holdem, the best W. can do is bluff and he doesn't appear all that capable of doing that in spite of all that chaos about him which he has in part caused himself. Well done, Mr. President!

Protester Disturbs Hu's Visit Hu Jintao's visit was interupted today at the White House. While speaking a reporter from Epoch Times, a pro-Falun Gong paper, starting shouting at the Chinese President. While I personally don't think this is news, what is interesting is that...
