The Daily Nightly from NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams

About this blog

The Daily Nightly began on May 31, 2005. As Brian wrote in his first post it aims to provide a narrative of the broadcast day and a window into the editorial process at NBC Nightly News. Brian weighs in every weekday and NBC News correspondents and producers post regularly.

Brian Williams became the seventh anchor and managing editor in the history of NBC Nightly News on December 2, 2004. Read his full biography.

About last night

Many of you have responded to our closing piece last night, the news about the discovery of Robert Frost's JFK Inauguration poem. We were happy to be the first to air that story on television -- and we have been inundated with requests for the poem itself. I'm told we're on the phone with the Frost Estate as I type, and we'll link to the poem or post it in this space once we get permission. As a presidential history buff, it was a joy to write -- superbly produced by Subrata De -- and merely researching the fire in the lectern was an enjoyable project yesterday while we were compiling the piece. Thank you for all of your positive responses. Special thanks to the folks at the JFK Library.

GO HARD OR GO HOME
Tonight we are going big after one major story in particular. Competition being what it is (even among friends), I will have to leave it at that for now, as much as I dislike coyness of any kind in this space. Also in the broadcast tonight, today's latest terrorist video (why it's so notable) and one of the gruesome outgrowths of the current war: the perverse, reverse relationship between body armor and the profound good that it does... and the fact that the soldiers who survive catastrophic trauma are often left behind with head injuries. It's a piece that Bob Bazell has been working on for some time, and he'll air the first part of two spots tonight.

Also this evening, today's story about air travel. Regular readers know how much this frequent flier loves air travel.

With a mixture of curiosity and trepidation, I am tonight attending a screening of the new film, UNITED 93. I think it will be a setback for all New Yorkers. I also think it might serve a strange kind of purpose: by reminding us of what was done to us and the stakes right now.

We have a great broadcast planned for tonight and we hope you can join us.

Brian, In regards to the movie United 93, I find it unfortunate that the War in Iraq has been claimed to be associated with 911 so many times by the White house, Fox News etc…. Looking at the CIA leak, the recent hearings Libby, Cheaney, Rove, it simply not true! Yet Americans believed the sound bites, fueled by attacks of anti-patriotism if those sane thinking Americans, asked questions of the consequences of this War. I was just as sadden as everyone was by 911, Afghanistan and the war on terrorists is one thing, but Iraq is wrong! Our greatest Presidents were Uniters! We are so much more divided now than before 911. What is Wrong with Bush? We Americans can only hope that we learn the truth of why this administration went into this War and could burden our next generations because of this. Will the profiteers of this war pay back our children? The truth will decide our next elections! Please continue to report the truthful news that affects the majority of Americans. Thank You

Brian,

I've been working professionally in industry for 30 years. I'm an independent voter. I use to vote as a Democrate but got fed up with the Democratic parties excessive spending, corporate corruption, and poor leadership from both houses. I also changed because of my own convictions and the way I would want my Government to treat its citizens, communities, social issues and economic ones. Similar to the way I live my own life.

I believe in this Country and have faith that our form of Government works when given the opportunity and cooperation between branches. One thing we have lost is the ability to compromise and find a middle ground in many issues. In a general sense, our society has changed from a majority of moderate level headed people (both parties) to a winner take all mentality. This competitive spirit is good in business but not so good in Government. It tends to split all voters down the middle without a moderate point of view in the majority.

If a Government is run like a business and a President acts as a CEO, everything is based on the bottom line. Strategies are kept secret, decisions are made on expenditures that always are associted with return on investment or the short term bottom line. It has little to do with helping the workers way of life/security or helping them achieve goals that require assistance. This helps stockholders and executives but thats all.

We were all taught how to listen, understand, ask questions when we don't or when we need additional information and respect other peoples points of view. These are not virtues but simple respectful manners that have been forgotten or are not practiced enough. Government is not a competition where the winner takes all.

Politicians need to lead by example so that discourse can remain civil and balanced. I believe if politicians were limited to a few terms rather than thinking of their political ambitions as a career would remove the fund raising and competitiveness to stay in office and perhaps legislate more for the voters. Reform is needed in our Government because our Constitution demands it.

Last night it gave me a sinking feeling and made me almost physically ill to hear headlined on NBC Nightly the fact that President Bush plans to cast the first veto he has ever cast on the spending bill containing funding for the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and Gulf Coast recovery.

I'm not so concerned about how the wars will be funded, because I suppose Bush will find alternate ways of funding them--reason being he has staked his whole legacy on fighting the War on Terror.

However, I cannot be so sanguine regarding his doing so to obatin post-hurricane recovery funding. In fact, I am seriously bummed out. It saddens me and makes my blood boil to think that President Bush would cut and run on this vital funding measure.

This is the all-important, long-awaited bill Louisiana and her people have been pinning their hopes on. It contains the $4.2 billion in Community Development Block Grants that Bush wants to go to Louisiana (or, in light of the current veto threat, had wanted). The bill is not perfect--Sen. David Vitter wants to add more funding for Louisiana's levees, but its passage will definitely be a good start.

As for Bush's veto threat--this is a dagger at the heart of Louisiana. I wonder if Bush has any clue about its nerve-wracking impact on Louisiana and her already traumatized people. This is one of the cruelest forms of psychological abuse--for Bush to promise Louisiana the recovery help she so urgently needs, only to threaten to yank it away at the last minute.

President Bush picked the wrong bill for his first possible veto. One can only hope that Congress will
have the sense to override it if it takes place.

Furthermore, there's something I'm wondering about: with all of NBC Nightly's coverage of "Pain at the Pump" and the reasons gas prices are so high, why hasn't there been a full report on lingering damage left by Katrina and Rita to refineries in Louisiana and Texas, which has kept domestic production down? I imagine this is because it sounds more interesting to blame hostile governments in such oil producers as Iran and Venezuela, instability in places like Iraq and Nigeria, and possible nefarious activities on the part of Big Oil.

In regard to the Movie, I find it strange that there are so many unanswered questions about 911 and inconsistancies in the Official 911 Commission report regarding the events on that day. Where has all the investigative journalism gone to ask the questions that need to be answered. What has happened to the media these days.

Recent comments by President Bush offering concern toward the gas crisis are disingenuous and insincere.

The current gas crisis is right in line with the Bush agenda to drill in the Arctic National Refuge. I believe the high price of gas play directly into his plan to break down Americans who are against the drilling in the Arctic National Refuge, changing popular opinion to one of pro drilling.

Just as his personal and business ties to the Saudi Royal family been in direct conflict of interest of national security, so have most of his decisions made during this presidency been laced with a slant toward personal gain.

History will show that George Bush has been allowed to undermined national security and put every America at risk during his reign as President of the United States.

Thank you
