A shakeup, but not a reboot

There's more than meets the eye to this latest White House shakeup. Of course, any administration sees turnover in year six, but this is no average second term. These changes are course correction and as one republican told me recently the changes would be more significant than people expected.

The big change is a subtle one: Karl Rove, the President's political guru and since last year deputy chief of staff will be losing some of his day to day duties as deputy to new chief of staff, Josh Bolten. The proximate cause, officials said today, was Bolten himself. He wanted his guy, a former Budget office aide Joel Kaplan, as his right hand man.

But Rove is not a guy who gives up his power easily. The move comes as he remains a leading target for critics who think the Bush team has lost its way (Katrina, Harriet Miers, Iraq).

What's perhaps more important is that Rove returns to doing politics in this all important election year. The President has told people he will sprint to the end of his term. But he won't run very fast if he loses control of congress. I spoke to numerous republicans today who were quite pleased that Rove was going back to what he does best: helping the President his party win elections.

But in the end, what does all this change mean? White House policy isn't changing. What they are looking for around here is a reboot - a second chance to start the second term.

Scott McCellen has to be breathing a breath of fresh air by not having to look rediculous for this administration. David, I always look forward to your intelligent comments and questions at the White House briefings, as well as your news reporting. You don't let anyone off the hook but you are always professional.

Tony Snow? They have Tony Snow in mind to replace Scott McClellan? How deep one has to go in its bullpen in order to actually find a "stopper" out there in this grim world of truthtelling! FoxNews does provide an adequate bunch of spinmeisters suitable enough to play cat-and-mouse with the staunchest questioner around but surely one may want to look at another location despite Fox's accolades. Perhaps, successful POW's who did not flinch to the enemy and disgorge information that the enemy could use might be a better play in this concern. After all,as seen with McClellan and the White House Press Corp, one would assume that the NO-MANS-LAND existing between the so-called press secretary and his adversaries, that so-called press corp, may require far more indepth responses than a mere FoxNews anchor can provide, someone who truly understands counterterrorism on a first hand basis. Tony Snow is not the man! Could this be the place for a McCain, a POW capable of spitting it back as he gets spat upon, who knows!

I sure hope you follow-up on a politcal operative for the GOP working in the White House and being paid by taxpayers.

David,

I always enjoy your segments and coverage on Whitehouse issues. We out here believe you have been a strong media voice asking touch questions that need answers. We hoped your fellow reporter would get the idea and it looks like your work has inspired others.

Regarding Karl Roves, this is where I have a problem understanding the difference between campaign finance reform, soft money, and my government officials (paid by taxpayer money) going out and working for re-election committees and campaigns aligned with their party.

How is it that Karl Roves can go out on the stump or create strategies for the Republican party in selected districts while working as our deputy chief of staff? Has this always been the role of the deputy chief of staff? Is there not a conflict of interest and doesn't this speak more about ethics in government when officials move away from their defined job functions? I would question this in both parties. Isn't that the job of the RNC head? Who was Clinton's goto staff member to deal with political management and did he/she work directly with the DNC for campaigning? More background information would be appreciated.

Keep up the good work

Well David no more Scotty. The new guy isn't going to be much better. Remember Scotty was coving for the White House and doing what he was told. Ok he's not quick on his feet but he was told to tell the lies he told. Nothing will change. You will continue to be given lies. I thought it was interesting that all of the people that Bush fires or has something on him get a job with Fox. Is Fox the White House news station now? If so its understandable as Fox lies so much they don't even know that their lying.
But the White House didn't have to lie on Scotty by saying he was wrong about the CIA leak,Cheney shooting as they told him to say it. I hope Fitzgerald gives Rove his indictment soon I know its coming because these guys are so guilty its in your face guilt.

One has to wonder just how much grief McClellan had to take from this presidential administration. Talk about being worse than Abu Graib, just how maniacal can it be for the press secretary to daily be buffeted by legitimate questions concerning a not so savory administration only to have to appear incredibly stultified on that daily basis. McClellan it appears needs the very same treatment that a beleagured soldier requires from battle fatigue. A man can take only so much and this president made McClellan look so bad. Who wants to come out of an administration looking like Don Rumsfeld, who now appears headed for a job with Circus De Sole' after Bush is done with him(sans clown costume)!
