"Live" blogging the president's speech
Moments from now President Bush will launch another attempt to soothe the nation's anxiety over Iraq with a series of speeches designed to explain how the war is going and the plan to turn things around. Press Secretary Scott McClellan said today that "progress is being made, but more needs to be done." The problem for the President is that the public has moved well beyond that. There isn't a communication problem in the country's estimation, there's a policy problem.
Unlike the President's last PR blitz, this one comes amid growing concern about civil war. The successful elections of last December have been overtaken by the real prospect that sectarian violence will overtake the insurgency as the greatest threat to the future of a unified, peaceful Iraq.
Is it hopeless? Polls show many Americans, including a majority of Republicans, are asking that question. The other question: what is the U.S. role now? We alone can't make it better, if Iraqis don't fix it themselves.
I'll be live blogging during the President's speech from George Washington University. Click "Discuss" to send me your comments.

I am tired of all the lies, and all the phony reasons for the occupation of a country that did nothing to the United States. The inspectors found no WMD's. Way over 100,000 citizens have been killed, and too many soldiers for what? Every day sentient Americans cry for the end of human lives that had so much promise. Journalists and peace activists have been murdered for only trying to help out. Mr. Bush and Mr. Rumsfeld and all the generals have to get out of their bubble and stop talking as if everything is rosey. The ones running this war are not listening to us. The American people overwhelmingly want the troops out of harms way. People continue to die every day, and they are saying there is no civil war. There is, and the American people can see this. People are not stupid. This has to end, and I say bring the troops home, because military intervention is not working. I stand will all the people who want out troops alive and safe. They never should have been put in the position of danger.

be careful what you say now. THe patriot act is in full effect. what you say against bush can be deemed as terrorist ideology. define what is terrorism? its such a broad word. That it can be labelled on any US citizen ..And you can be taken to a prison camp for up to 8 months with no fair judge or lawyer. oh yeah didnt bush just replace almost all of our supreme court judges with his friends?

When strong man Tito departed, Yugoslavia came apart. Odds are that Saddam, the terrible, has been outsted, and Iraq will fall apart in a civil war. If the US was not as powerful as it is, Bush, Cheney and Rumsfeld would, eventually, be tried as war criminals. Not much different than Nuremberg. Politics is dirty business, and our leaders in congress did not have the guts to say NO to these warmongers. PR what you must Mr President but civil war in Iraq is right around the corner, and you and your cronies are responsible.

I am so humiliated that we Americans are represented to the world by a man who started a war, declared victory (Mission Accomplished!)and continues to ignore the horror he has created for the Iraqi people. Why, at least, don't our generals do something (like resign)to stop the useless slaughter of our men and women over there? Why are we so passive about letting all this happen in the first place? Where is the outrage?

I for one don't understand why he keeps giving these speeches. I guess it's an attempt to pacify the masses, but Bush could care less what "the American people" think. He and his pals had a few goals when the supreme court apppointed them to the presidency...to finish the war they weren't allowed to finish, to enrich Haliburton and any other interests they may have, to seat as many right-wing Christian judges as possible so that our lives can be dictated to us, and a few I have probably missed. They do not believe in democracy...they only hope you do, so they can continue to fool you into believing you live in one. They do not live in the same world as most of us, and don't ever want to.

The President back is firmly agianst the ropes and the punches thrown are taking its' toll. Here's a man that has been proped up from the beginning by the Republican faithful. Now, they have litteraly abandoned him, a man in a boat without a paddle...the current moving swiftly against him! Was Cheney practicing for the big hit during his hunting trip? This administration has gone way south. A few years ago the President was sailing along...chest out, shoulders back, strutting like a proud peacock. Now, his rating in the toilet he looks like a tired old hag! His party's all but deserted him. All because he's lied to the American people and now has been caught!!!

The emporer has no clothes. I've been saying that for 5 years now. I'm glad to see so many who recognize it. That won't help, however, if Bush, et al, manage to start WW III in the Middle East. The way things are headed, it wouldn't surprise me.

It is so sad.So so sad, To here our President of these united states go before the nation, and continue to spread more lies about the war in Iraq.Mr. Bush doesn't even have a careing heart in my opion. As I listen to him speak,One can tell the words are just that someone else's words on paper.Every time our president address our nation about any subject there is a disconnect of what he is saying and what he knows. I would like to say to President Bush."Remember your oath of office to, protect the constitution and defending the laws, and the people of the land".You have not been a UNITER.

Unreal......Thats how i would coin Bush's speech today. This man and his advisors must live in the Tenth Kingdom.....cause they sure dont live in the real world .....where 70%......which is a majority even by bush math....say that they have made one stumble after another. Enough already BUSH......quit stompin around giving set speeches to hand picked audiances...sit down "in the white house where you belong" turn on your tv, and get in touch with the country your supposed to lead not destroy.

No one seems to ask the question, "What if the Iraqis are simply not strong enough to stop this insurgency?" We went in created this chaos, and now want to tell them if they cannot get their military might and government together, it is their own fault. I feel bad for them. This war was a huge mistake.

Sounds like same old imcopentent Mr. Bush and Cabinet. They are really good of dancing around the truth and these speeches should not be any different than all of the prior ones. I think they should drop the whole Iran thing because they can't even handle things in the United States and besides how in the hell can we tell someone else that it is so good and they can't even come up with a good example or lead to follow. Maybe him and his whole staff should get a gun and march with the iraqie troops through bagdad for a couple of weeks without US troops and they should be on point to show their leadership.

I am so tired of the endless speeches....Bush sounds like a broken record....does anyone in this administration know what is actually going on in Iraq and in our own country, and if so, does anyone believe that the truth will ever come out so the American people can make rational judgements?

Same old speech, different day. When is the President going to wake up and smell the flowers? He is so out of reality with the American public!! When I heard that he was giving a speech on the good things that are happening I said oh good we will only have to listen to him for 30 seconds
Jeanette Schwerdtfeger (Sent Mar 13, 2006 2:17:25 PM)
President Bush has repeatedly stated from the beginning that this will be a long term struggle against the terrorists. It seems that we want instant success, and that won't happen in the middle east. This is the right thing to do in Iraq and it will take quite a while.

Is it hopeless you ask?. It was hopeless when we invaded and then proceeded to destroy a country that never attacked us. We were and are morally wrong and regardless of what Bush or you think, there is a moral right and wrong. Greed would seem to be the prime motivator in this morally corrupt Iraq endeavor (follow the money) and I am sure that in our Christian faith it lists greed as a sin (Along with the part about not killing). Is it hopeless? You bet.

No matter what is going to be said, it will be too little, too late. We all know this war was not necessary, and it has gone on too long, with too many events that have left us with fewer active allies.
The families of the fallen should be better cared for, especially in light of the treatment and arrests of of one mother who simply wants a conversation with the President. Why is he refusing her?
We are being prepared for further conflicts with Iran and N. Korea. Why are we not pursuing Bin Laden instead? Was he not the object of our response to the 9/11 attacks? His niece wants to have a reality show of her own, why not have a reality show about our seemingly open borders instead? A Taliban spokeman is attending Yale, while the families of the fallen still grieve since the fall of that regime. How can this be?
What can the President say about Iraq that will ring true except that Haliburton is doing very well?
Robert Dogga (Sent Mar 13, 2006 1:41:51 PM)
I don't care what bush and his spinmeisters say, Iraq is another Vietnam. As someone who served in Vietnam, the Iraq war bears ALL of the same characteristics as the quagmire we were in in SE Asia. It will be impossible to get out for years and we'll look like dumb asses once again. bush should never have believed that he could get in and out with impunity. Then again, someone who spent their Vietnam era service in Alabama flying airplanes that were never used in Vietnam can't be expected to know that. And, since he doesn't listen to anyone's advice except his own, maybe it doesn't matter in this case that he hid out in Alabama.

I am so tired of hearing Mr. Bush "reject" the notion that there might be Civil War in Iraq. Whether he rejects the idea or not, if he were the competent leader that he purports to be, he would be consulting with the military regarding a plan for such a contingency. Of course, we should NOT have embarked on this war of choice in the first place, as he clearly used rhetoric and the raw emotions following 9/11 to frighten people into supporting it. Now we can only hope that Mr. Bush will truly be held accountable some day - there is much blood on his hands. In the meantime, let's get our troops home before any more lives are lost. God bless John Murtha!

Although the Administration has touted the vast numbers of trained Iraqi military and police, in actuality the ability of these trained troops to act independently under the newly elected government is not that great. The fact that many independent religious militias are running sections of Iraq, and not under the control of the central government, is disturbing and just adds to the tinder box of possible civil war.

Does not seem to be much enthusiasm here, am I wrong?

Does the the President really expect people to change their minds about Iraq when we see day to day what is happening over there? That is of course that what the news channels show us is true and exact. We dont get to see the behind the scenes actions, only what the news channels show us. Yet, with so many lives being lost, what is the exit strategy now? Continue to lose more lives until we finally realize, "Hey, maybe we should leave now?!" The government of the United States of America needs to make a stern decision about our military personnel in Iraq and they should do it NOW!
Michael Eilers, Colorado Springs, CO. (Sent Mar 13, 2006 1:33:05 PM)
The president has lost touch with what is going on in Iraq. He has been trying to put out fires from his domestic agenda ie Katrina, ports, mid-term elections. Irag is to volitale now for the U.S. to help anymore.

P RES bUSH SHOULD SPEND MORE TIMEM AT THE WHITE HOUSE INSTEAD OF STILL OUT THERE TRYING TO IMPROVE HIS POPULARITY NOT GOING TO WORK PROPLE ARE TIRED OF THE SAME OLD SPEACHES OVER AND OVER. wHO IS ADVISING HIM . NOT TO SMART. GO TO WORK MR. BUSH DO YOUR JOB. QUIT STOMPING FOR YOUR OWN POPULARITY. tHERE IS A LOT OF WORK TO BE DONE GO HOME AND TEND TO IT.

Unless President Bush speaks about a clear and concise exit plan, with a set of defined times for when the Troops will be brought home from Iraq, his speech is useless. This is a Civil War in Iraq, and tap-dancing around that will only bolster a negative image of President Bush. It's time to bring the Troops home.
