"Live" blogging the president's speech
Moments from now President Bush will launch another attempt to soothe the nation's anxiety over Iraq with a series of speeches designed to explain how the war is going and the plan to turn things around. Press Secretary Scott McClellan said today that "progress is being made, but more needs to be done." The problem for the President is that the public has moved well beyond that. There isn't a communication problem in the country's estimation, there's a policy problem.
Unlike the President's last PR blitz, this one comes amid growing concern about civil war. The successful elections of last December have been overtaken by the real prospect that sectarian violence will overtake the insurgency as the greatest threat to the future of a unified, peaceful Iraq.
Is it hopeless? Polls show many Americans, including a majority of Republicans, are asking that question. The other question: what is the U.S. role now? We alone can't make it better, if Iraqis don't fix it themselves.
I'll be live blogging during the President's speech from George Washington University. Click "Discuss" to send me your comments.

What is actually happening in Iraq is very different from the comments I'm reading here and what NBC is reporting. Time for me to get my news from a more reliable source.

American people, our government stated that there was NO CONNECTION between 9/11 and Iraq. Can you comprehend this?

The most weird comment I have heard in a while "I will do anything this administration wants"that is a scary thought to hear from a adult!what happened to free will?oh I forgot the extreme court made it illegal.

Enough is Enough, thats what my sticker on my car says. Some of the Republicans are waking up to his lies. Remember when on the deck of the ship he said we had won the war. I can remember when another man in Germany tried to rule the world and Bush must be a clone of that man. The people of the United States should rise up and demand that he resign.

I find it amusing that the GOP faithful are always the first to point out Liberals blindly following the media. Okay, well its not very hard to find a story about Republicans screwing something up. Hurricane Katrina, Iraq, healthcare reform, Abramoff, Cheney, pollution the Libby scandal... I mean come on, we have more dirt to sift through with this administration then we could hope to get through in 10 years. Our last President got in hot water.. for allowing an intern to sleep with him. Perhaps I am confused, but I'm beginning to think that a little adultery doesn't quite compare. I hope that the American population wakes up in time for the mid term elections so we can elect people who vote their minds and not with their wallets.... bring our troops home!

I have read a lot of negative feedback in this blog. Have all of you written your congressmen and senators with your complaints? Also those who defend this action have you written your representatives in Washington? The congress gave the green light for a go in Iraq. Both sides of the isle and if you want to put someone down perhaps you should look at the people who represent your states and let them know how you feel. I do not like war anymore than the next man but if we are going to start military action and then turn tail and run when someone takes our sucker away we will not have any respect in the world. Why do you thing the terrorists think they can change the people here and get them to run like cowards. Cowards is what they think we are after Korea and Vietnam. By the way I have written my representatives in Washington more than once and I will stand behind whatever this democratically elected government decides in the end like it or not.

Why do the Bush-backers insist on believing that anyone who disagrees with him and his war policies are unpatriotic and the cause of the our problems. Agreeing with the president does not make you a better citizen. Remember: Patriotism is the leading cause of blindness.

Its interesting that this administration is the one that stated it would bring back honor to the White House. I'm still waiting on that one... As an American I was outraged when Bush went against the UN in dealing with Iraq. Sadly though as awful as 9/11 was the Bush administration draped themselves in the US flag an uttered "9/11" to any question asked at the time..(still do come to think of it..) and it has led us into a war that we have no chance of walking away from cleanly. Billions have been spent to get us to this point, where ever this point is..don't ask Bush, he is still trying to fold up the road map that got us there in the first place. I am sure that as part of an exit plan though we will give billions more to Iraq to help them get back on their feet.
It should be noted that while GW is the easily the worst the US has ever seen as a President we should be eyeing Congress and the Senate for their roles in this as well whether Democrat or Republican. The Republicans have enjoyed control of the House and the Senate and have shown exactly why you don't want one party to solely control the business of the US people. We have so many problems just within our shores and yet these people that we elected have no problems spending enormous amounts of money without regard to the thoughts of the people that elected them to office.

Can we really trust what he says anymore. Bush has lied from day one and the lies just keep on coming. I don't think he knows what truth means. Tell the parents of the young children that died in this invasion that we're winning and that we have won the hearts and souls then listen to the troops that are over there and what the killings everyday. Who would you believe? Notice the Bush girls are not joining the troops. We lost this war because we invaded this country based on lies.
Jackie Rawlings Riverside California (Sent Mar 13, 2006 6:56:22 PM)
Just what America needs -- more PR from Bush. Enough said. And, journalists, either challenge this Puppet King in the White House or stop wasting your country's time and shut up. We don't need your instant replays "full of sound and fury signifying nothing."
Kim Austin (Sent Mar 13, 2006 6:53:51 PM)
We won't be listening to Bush tonight because it's bingo night.
Mildred Byrnes,Apache Junction,Az (Sent Mar 13, 2006 6:46:39 PM)
It is no wonder we are making such slow progress in trying to stop a radical Muslim movement from taking over the middle east. With such a divided country
and so much hatred for our government, within our own country, how can we hope to prevail? What a shame we can't teach our own people to be better citizens?
It was the congress of the United States that got us into this war, not just the President, and if we don't honor and respect our leaders in time of war how can we expect to ever defeat those who violently oppose our way of living.
Marie Wilson, Lone Tree Co (Sent Mar 13, 2006 6:22:17 PM)
We use to be a proud country and widely respected around the world. At least to most of us, we believed that we always had the moral high ground and would never consider invading or attacking a country that never fired a shot or was a threat to our democratic society, never condone or have a policy that encouraged torture of prisoners by our military even though our POWs suffered that fate in others hands and willingly accept spying on US citizens in our own country. The war on Iraq has changed all of this. What in the world allowed all of this to happen in such a great country as the U.S.A – can we blame this all on 9/11 or was this an opportunity for these people to put their plans into action? The outcome of the Iraq invasion was so predicable to any thinking person. The Bush Administration has been a disaster on almost every front. What have they gotten right? We have three more years of this incompetent group of people. All the spin and speeches are not going to fix the things they have messed up. Heaven help the next Administration (Democrat or Republican) who has to try and get us back on track and get us out of the mess in Iraq.
Chuck McMullen, Brookings, South Dakota (Sent Mar 13, 2006 5:58:58 PM)
A nation that does not learn from it's past mistakes is doomed to repeat them. Did we accomplish anything in the Korean War or the Vietnam War? Unfortunately, we sacrificed the lives of good Americans. Iraq is no different. It is a gurella war with an unknown enemy.I was surprised when Congress authorized such an action. I see no end in site for the blood shed and loss of American lives. Let's bring the troops home and let the people of Iraq determine their own fate!
James wikstrom, Oyster Bay, N.Y. (Sent Mar 13, 2006 5:56:16 PM)
Why doesn't Bush get his head out of the sand and get honest. It seems that there are a lot of people who do not have sense enough to see what a mess he has made. Bush talks about our allies, here is a man who said we (I) will do what I want amd we dont need your permission, many of them are now our enemies.
Jack Lattrel L'Anse, Mi. (Sent Mar 13, 2006 5:50:31 PM)
President Bush makes a lot of emotional appeals. Americans don't won't to hear about Iraqi's "staring into the abyss and not liking what they see." Where are the hard factual statements? We want to hear is statements regarding what the Iraqi's doing to "take charge." What are the visible signs that insurgents are being stopped and Iraqi's are managing the efforts? Please sir, stop the schmaltz.

I was very surprised to find so many felt just as
I do regarding our President's action (or lack oactions) taken in Iraq. As a former U.S.Marine who
served in the Korean war, I believe it is tragic for
those having to serve in Iraq, for such useless
causes. God bless the USA. Bring our troops home!

I am convinced that the MAIN reason for this war was about oil. Because our country keeps slurping up all the oil it can get its hands on, the government will do anything to preserve our sources of supply. Also: just my opinion .... there is already civil war in Iraq. It's not something that may begin in the future. It's there now. And last: The necessary economic, financial, and physical infrastructure needed to support a democracy did not exist in Iraq when the U.S. invaded that country, and it does not exist now. I hold little hope for it succeeding there. Just because the U.S. wanted Iraq to be a democracy does not mean we would fast-forward that country from what it was into a democracy over night. The Iraqi people, all of them, will need to take over this incredible mess and, hopefully, be able do what's right for themselves.

I am glad that David Gregory is asking the tough questions down the road, and watching the Bush Admin. squirm everytiime they want to do what tickles their fancy, not realizing the implications of what it does to the rest of the country.
Hurricane Katrina, example of blunders encountered, but Tax relief given for the Richest, while the poor worry about having a job, while the work travels overseas to less fortunate countries begging for the work.
What ever happened to taking care of domestic policy, such as education, health, employment. Seems like the rich are in it for themselves, but I don't see their children dying in Iraq....Give em hell, Dick; I listen on drive home from work on satellite radio, but when I watch nbc tv, its no where to be seen, is the newsmedia censored that much nowadays?...

My how soon we forget 9/11 and how this nation united behind a President who did what he said he would do and the nation was behind him. Again the media has put their spin on the truth and I believe are responsible for turning the nation against a President who has only tried to do what's right for America by protecting it. He has had an uphill battle against the powers that be ever since his first election. I don't hear one word of support. I'm still proud to be an American, but I'm no longer proud of America. I came from a generation that respected leadership. All of a sudden we have become the experts thinking we have all the answers. The only reason we have the right to make negative comments is because we have the FREEDOM to do so. And that's what this President has done for this county. Kept us FREE! Think about it!

George Bush needs to think before he does anything. He's going about this whole war thing the wrong way. Why can't Americans see this? What is it going to take for Americans to realize that this war is senseless and that Bush should be taking care of this country and quit cutting our programs? We want our America back and run by someone who has compassion for the American people?

Just clicked on the blog to confirm my suspicions. I was right, the left wing liberals are out in force. It doesn't matter what the president says or does, they will continue to be fed the same stuff from the mainstream media and believe every word of it. The people of this country better wake up or they will be in control.
