Kids, tests and the Internet

No more pencils... no more books... it may sound like a school kid's dream, but it's a reality in some places. A lot of parents may not realize how often kids are encouraged to turn to the Internet. If the Web helps them answer questions during tests, is it cheating? We'll take you inside a high-tech classroom, where some say technology has gone too far.

Interesting story tonight. If the testing is part of "pop" quizzes, which have, as their intent, keeping students involved self-regulated learning, then this use of technology makes sense. If this was used during high-stakes state accountability exams, then that is an animal of a different color.

You can find more information about the role of frequent "pop" quizzes on academic achievement at the following blog post that recently dealt with the topic in the context of cognitive psychology's research in self-regulated learning.

It's too early to have seen the story, but you raise such an interesting question I can't help but respond.
Is it cheating?? Maybe no more than the "open book" tests we took. The trick then, as it would be with the internet, was to know where in the book to look. It's like calculators in math, for a long time that was cheating, but the ablilty to do higher math correctly outweighted the need to do the simple math in your head.
Maybe Einstien was on to something, it's not what you know, it's knowing where to find what you don't know.
