Friday's top stories

Campbell is too busy to post today, so we'll fill this space with the copy from our e-mail newsletter. This is delivered to subscribers -- for free -- every weekday around 5:30 p.m. ET.  If interested, you can sign up by clicking here.

Immigration reform: It's another issue that divides Americans. Just what should the U.S. government do with immigrants who are in the country illegally?  Next week we'll take an in-depth look at the topic as the Senate considers a controversial bill, but we'll begin our coverage tonight with a report from NBC's Mark Mullen in our Burbank bureau.  He'll tell you why thousands of people in Los Angeles, Phoenix and Atlanta staged school walkouts, marches and other work stoppages today.

Among the other stories you won't want to miss tonight:

"THE WAR IN IRAQ: 3 YEARS LATER": Tonight, we conclude our anniversary coverage with a remarkable retrospective from our man in Baghdad, Richard Engel. Richard's been in Iraq from the beginning, before the first bombs fell. He's seen it all, and as you'll see tonight, recorded a lot of it in his personal video diary.

We'll also focus tonight on the shifting opinion of the war here at home.  NBC's Mike Taibbi reports from Susquehanna High School in rural Pennsylvania, where students continue to enlist even as some residents begin to raise doubts about what the U.S. is doing in Iraq.

If you missed any of this week's series, you can find all the stories and video at www.Nightly.MSNBC.com.

MAKING A DIFFERENCE: NBC's Anne Thompson brings you the story of a pink dress and how it kept one high school prom in Ocean Springs, Miss., from becoming another casualty of Katrina.

We hope you'll join us for those stories and all the rest of the day's news.

This is truely ridiculous. I'm all for people trying to find a better life sitution, but do it legally! The illegals are costing us way to much money, when they don't pay taxes, and use all of our programs. Would they allow americans the same if we went to mexico, Hell no! If things are so bad in Mexico, then the people need to push the mexican government to make things better, why is it our problem? I wish they would just go home, I'm tired of accommodating people who come here and refuse to speak english, and one more thing, they aren't doing jobs americans won't do, I've done plenty of jobs in my life that were difficult and paid me barely anything. I don't feel sorry for them, go home and give us our country back.

How funny is this? Five years of republicans controling the agenda and doing nothing on immigration reform and now election year and their all jumping on the bandwagon.Too little too late from an Administration , that despite the retoric, has made America more dangerous and increased hatred for our Counrty from a failed foreign policy!American's would have to be complete idiots not to see right through these phonies they put in office.Time for a change!

I see that Mark Mullen has reported that all the latino's are "OUTRAGED" at immigration reform? Hell man, as an american citizen I am "OUTRAGED" that it laws have not been stregthened sooner, "OUTRAGED" at all the previous amnesty offerings, "OUTRAGED" that I can't call anyplace without having to push "ONE" to do my business in english (Just why in the hell is english not automatic?) and I am "OUTRAGED" even further by the way the media fails to see and report on the fact that our country has been suffering an overwhelming influx of illegal aliens? Why is no one reporting it that has now reached the point where it is crushing our school districts under the weight of all the the illegal children? Reporting how they are stressing our public services and hospitals to the point of no return? I will tell you that everywhere I travel in the USA it has now reached the point of stupidity. Even in the building where I work, every night a crew of people come in to clean, and NONE can speak any english. Am I to believe these are all legal aliens? So here we have a one reason no one cares. THEY WORK FOR PENNIES! Companies find it real profitable contracting out cleaning and thousands of other services, but then paying out minimal wages by hiring illegals. I have called the immigration service and their reply was if I didn't have proof they couldn't investigate? I also volunteer my time each week to tutor kids in math at a local school, and I can tell you firsthand that all of classrooms are so full of kids that don't speak english that the teahers literally can't teach much to them. I know I can't tutor a kid much if all he can do is sit and stare at me because he doesn't know what I am saying. I have a few friends who do tutoring in other schools and I know people who teach school in several different states, and they say it is the same everywhere now. The US is being overrun with illegal aliens (including children) and it is now literally keeping YOUR kids from getting the proper education your tax dollars have paid for. I will likely be called extreme, but I WANT 2 BIG DAMN WALLs built across our borders, and I want the area between them mined, and boobytraped beyond belief, and it should be stationed with automatic machine guns to kill anything that enters this no man's land area. No illegal alien has any rights here (and I do not care what our foolish courts may say) and in my opinion if they die attempting to get in so what? We in the USA are not responsible for Mexico, or the rest of the world's problems. And why are we being such candypants in our efforts to round them up and throw them back out? I can tell you it is too many people getting rich off the cheap labor like the cleaning service owner I spoke of earlier, and they all make sure to write a campaign donation check each year to their local Republican party. This is sad, and sadder that we have so many in the US who fail to see that to the Republican's money matters, and those people without a check in their hand to donate just flat don't exist. Between the illegal flood of immigrants, and the outsourcing of this countries lifeblood of industrial and manufacturing jobs, I hate to imagine what a pitiful waste of space the US will have become in 25-30 years. We will have 3% of the population (the wealthy) living out their lives in gated communities with heavily armed private armies guarding them, while the rest of us scrape by on what we can grow, barter for or steal. Jeez, we will have finally BECOME Mexico!!

Am I supposed to be swayed by 500,000 illegals wanting to be citizens. There illegal immagrants! The LA cops should have started looking for green cards.

While trying to find more consistent work and finish school, I've been struggling for the past year trying to maintain work and pay my bills, mostly painting and landscaping. So don't tell me these illegals are doing jobs us Americans don't want. My ancestors who immigrated here followed the law and respected the counry and people that accepted them. These protestors are yelling about freedom? Yeah -- free healthcare, free education, free welfare for their children, free prison space for their criminals, free public programs.... All paid for by my tax dollars. That bill seems to keep going up too. It's not about racism -- what is it the protestors think they are special? Everyone else from everywhere else has to immigrate the right way if they want in. Background checks, documentation, etc. These people illegally cross our borders by the thousands. They bring their crime, drugs, gangs, and their problems to be paid for by those of us who actually have to abide by the law. The fact that many/most completely disregard our language notwithstanding, it wouldn't matter if it were hispanics or any other ethnicity. It's a freebie for them shouldered by those of us shouldering the burden. I'm really tired of hearing that they aren't all criminals, that they just want a better life. The second they cross that border, they BECOME a criminal. 100% of them. I'm tired of paying for that better life they're after....

I just left Hollywood and the teens march. I guess when you think about it all of americans are immigrates but the American Indians. Our country was founded on immigrates now I guess Bush wants to change that. At lease the Bush administration lets Americans know what he thinks of the people he even addressed African-Americans from the Gulf during Katrina as refugees. Bush will let us know who is an American and who isn't. Just remember to pay your taxes and don't say anything against the corrupt Administration.

Please do not confuse the issue by calling us who are against the inflox of thousands and thousands of illigals that come in to our country racists. WE ARE NOT.

They do not want to learn to speak egnlish , then why should they they come here under dozens of different names know the inns and outs of how to abuse and use our government programs and yes, get away with it because of a few bleeding hearts.

I am not a racist I am one that believes we have laws in this country that should be respected and these laws are not o be broken by anyone. If they are broken why have laws?

My family and I also came in to this county but we CAME IN THROUGH THE FRONT DOOR and had to wait years to qualify for a visa. My father had to be abble to prove he was qualified for a proffesion as well that no member of our family had any kind of criminal record. We live here since 1957 and NEVER USED ANY OF THE GOVERNMENT PROGRAMS even though many times we barely had enough to eat. We wanted to proof ourselves to become worhty Americans.

People say our country would go under without Immigrants? Yes it will go under if this trend continuos, billions of dollars are spend for these poeple, not just mexican but all that have no bussiness being here and 80% plus of their earnings are sent back to their own country. So how do we benefit from a few that truly are honest and pay taxes.

Why don't these same people that marched don't march in their own countries and make the same demands of their government?????

It got to the point were I am confused what our lenguaje is since most places I go everything is written and spoken in spanish. We have to learn spanish to appease this people. I am sick and tired of our hard earned taxes to go to this group instead of were it trully is needed and deserved.

loot at all these so called bleeding hearts all they do is open their mouth but do nothing to contribuite for either side.

The Dems are about to squander another opening to get the Senate and House back. Forget Impeachment
and Censure (for now) and come together with a all for one message. Hammer home that the reasons that we went to war were flawed but that now that we are their we need to help the security situation and not just get out. We can not afford to just up and leave the place in a mess. Go along with the argument that we must build up the Iraqi security forces before leaving but rrealize that the longer it takes, the more hits the GOP takes. Appear to support the troops and the new mission of building up the iraqi forces adn let the GOP take the hits when it takes years if ever for the security to be stable enough for a major reduction in troops.

Border patrol wife here with some insights, complaints and solutions to illegals.

It's unfortunate that the public takes the position of "if it doesn't concern me it doesn't matter to me". Well, illegals do effect you!!! The amount of identity theft and car theft in arizona is one of the highest, if not the highest, in the country. It is directly linked to illegals. That then causes higher credit card interest rates and higher car insurance rates. What about hospitals closing because 87% of the patients were NONpaying illegals. Doesn't it make (the public) mad that they all work hard to be a citizen of this country and yet someone can just cross our border and instantly have all the rights we have! Please!!! People are so worried about talking about it scared to be called racist, that isn't it at all. We are not racists. I truly think that Americans are ok with other people coming here, but legally. That is the whole point. We want people here, who are in the system, paying taxes and true citizens.

Ask any bordor patrol agent in AZ- 80% of the cars that they stop with "loads" are STOLEN cars from Phoenix. The public HAS to get the truth about how bad illegals hurt this state and country. It is NOT that I don't want them to come here, but why can't they do it legally! There are tens of thousands of people in this country who did it legally and they pay taxes and contribute, instead of using the hospitals, schools, roads and rights for FREE.

It is simple: come here legally, learn the language, enjoy America/prosper, contribute and pay taxes.

Those people who come across the desert come that way by their own choice!!! Yes I do feel bad when I hear all the deaths, and children, but again it was their risk. They knew what they were up against. They didn't have to risk their life, They CHOSE TO RISK THEIR LIFE. We aren't asking them to do that, so they can't be victims!!! True victims are people who are subject of other people doing something to them against their will. Sorry not the case. But this isn't about/against Mexicans. It is about ALL illegals.

Solutions:

to politicians: Yes we should have a strong law/program that allows people to come here to live or work, but again do it legally and pay taxes. The illegal people who are already here should have 16-24 months to get into the program and comply. If people don't do it they should get punished for the crime!!!! But to make sure that happens we need to have a specific AGENCY that is accountable SOLEY for enforcing that law. Which means there are two departments in the agency: one to process people through the program and to get them entered into our 'system' and to make sure the IRS has them in their system. Then the second department enforces the crime and punishes those who do not comply. PERIOD. Actually I think this agency should not be ran by government employees, it will be too slow and too bogged down. Contract this out to a private company who will make it happen, make it happen fast, and will stay motivated to keep it going. Then have a new government agency be involved in the 'policing' or 'enforcing' part of it. This country and state has to get some BALLS and start doing something instead of being worried how it will look if you hurt someone's feelings! Give me a break! Do what is right and do something fast. 9/11 can't happen again, and we won't be able to afford health care or car insurance if we are paying for everyone who isn't paying for it.

Also, another big problem (regarding current border patrol):
If the border patrol was ran by a private company you would NEVER HAVE agents who are being paid $75k-$100k spending 3-4 hours a day filling out paperwork. Instead, they have to be out in the field where they are trained to keep our borders safe, not in the office with pens.

let's do some numbers:
3000 agents times
40 hours a week times
52 weeks.
=6,240,000 total HOURS a year for border agents

3000 agents times
$80,000 a year (40/hr)
=$240,000,000.00 total DOLLARS a year for boarder agents

out of 6,240,000 hours
1,872,000 hours are spent secretarialy
at 40 an hour
=$74,880,000 total DOLLARS SPENT ON AGENTS BEING SECRETARIES

No corporation would allow that!!!!

Verses paying agents to do their job (we would catch a lot more) and then pay 5 secretaries a station at $30k a year, who would be 'backend' support for the agents, which would improve the agents moral 10 times because they HATE paperwork. It's a "little thing" in the governments eyes, but any corporation knows that it is crucial to keep employees happy and motivated. Corporations also know the importance of having effective systems to actually get the job done. Right now there is no law being created nor upheld, there is no real punishment, and there is no agency dedicated to upholding the law/punishing people who don't comply, it is a viscous cycle!! The agents catch the same guy twice a week, and feel ineffective and they work with ineffective systems and have very low moral.

To illegals: Come here. work. work hard. contribute to the good of this country. get educated. pay taxes. I work hard, very hard, for my money which I give 40% to the government. We help pay for roads, schools and hospitals. You don't. If all the illegals contributed to the community and to paying taxes this wouldn't be such a deal. Don't you get it-if you want to be here then be here truly. Wave our flags. Speak our language. Pay our taxes.

-----------
If the public knew just how much illegals hurt this city, state and country and their own pocket books maybe they would demand the politicians to do something. Immigration itself is one big problem, but it is also the numerous amounts of out-shoot problems that are equally as bad.

In the end, I hope we create a program that creates a powerful solution for ALL parties.
Janet

here's the bottom line for immigration reform-forget about racism, jobs,ya da ya da ya da, it's about security. it should not be possible for EVEN ONE terrorist, criminal, gang member, murderer,or child molester to just walk across the border (and molest and kill a child in one case) and it should not be possible for EVEN ONE terrorist to bring EVEN ONE kind of weapon or explosive across the border. Also, we should make sure EVERY PERSON who crosses the border does not have any medical problems or diseases( and this goes for both the canadian border and candians and americans for all those who may think i am racist or bigoted or whatever) whatever it takes to get that accomplished, do it and then worry about all the other aspects of immigration reform after that (ie. the workers, assimilation, healthcare, etc).

I'm glad you're doing the "feel good" story on the teen with the pink dress and more. I picked up on this yesterday on the MSNBC newsline and thought it to be an excellant one to bring up on the Nightly News.It just goes to show that there ARE a lot of young people who have come up with some pretty imaginative and creative ways to do some good with helping the hard luck folks in and around the Gulf Coast. Now THIS WAS or is quite an imaginative inspirational way to do this for those "prom girls" who would otherwise not have had this to look forward to and can look pretty at their prom. Now that's a good story to bring up tonight. Thank you.
