Cover for the White House?
If you saw today's White House briefing, none of us could believe that Scott McClellan was backing off the President's threat to veto any attempt to derail the ports deal -- allowing Dubai Ports World to assume management of major U.S. seaports. But he was, and minutes later we find out there is a deal: DPW will transfer management of the U.S. ports to a U.S. entity, thus giving the White House some cover.
The White House says they only knew of "rumors" of a deal, but one wonders whether there was coordination between the White House, DPW and Sen. John Warner, R-Va., who announced the agreement. It's clear the White House knew, especially after meeting with congressional leaders this morning, that Congress was prepared to buck him on this.
No one here wanted the President to veto his own party, so leave it to DPW, the state-run company no one apparently trusts to manage U.S. ports, to be the great peace broker in Washington! More to come of course.

This is one case which I am goin to assess throiughout its lifetime. That is, wher the Dubai Ports World matter will settle. I guess that Bush has figured that after 9/11 and after this paultry amount of time has elapsed, Americans would just forget about security and go back to a same-as-before situation of leaderless leadership, allowing this DPW profligacy to go through and not being able to connect the dots. And now we learn that far fewer than 5% of all containers are checked when these come into the country(more like about 1% of these containers are actually checked) gives one pause to reassess what the hell homeland security actually means for this president. I am going to follow this story studiously as DPW tries to assuage this country into complacency by a flim-flam process and extricating this president from the filth he has stepped into. What a learning process fro all of us!

Is it Thanksgiving for our allies on war on terror? Are we can carving up the country and sell it to all the parties involved in the war on terror? Turkey pieces for anyone? Where are we heading? Help us on the war on terror and a part of USA is up for your grab!! I love this country. We need to secure the borders. We must never barter trade the interest of the nation to any country, who ever they may be. British, French, German or the rest of the world. By the way, lets sell our Presidency to the highest bidder. In this way, we are a positive message to our allies.

For the past five years Bush & Cheney (Rove) have created the climate of a oneway fight on Terrorism. Any country related to the 9/11 attacks were "Enemys". Rice in her speeches and testimonies before Congress underscored this message. It was "Black and White" with no room for gray. Then the Dubai Ports Deal came along. The secretive White House's backroom appointees approve the Deal and Bush is out of the loop? Congress is never brought in and by time its out it's damage control with a clueless President and "Command-in-chief". What this administration has shoved down our throats over the past five years was predictable and now they have to deal with the vomit on the floor.

Do you agree with President Bush that the political storm over the Dubai ports deal is sending moderate Arab nations the wrong message?
I think it sends the right message, the people of the UNITED STATES ARE TIRED OF POOR LEADERSHIP. We were able to stand up to our president and say 'HEY WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU"
Lets use the illegal immigration and our borders as an example of poor leadership.

If the way the port deal has moved hurts our efforts against terrorists because we need to maintain ties with moderate Middle Eastern nations, perhaps the President and his strategists should have realized this before they made the deal in the first place.
The deal was ill-forged. I believe the entire deal was to provide financial gain to cronies and had no national interest on the agenda. I'm even more suspicious of this divestiture to some "American run interest". I'll have to see how detached that interest is from the White House or from the UAE before I make further comment.
I find it completely transparent that the President would try to re-direct blame for the failure of this deal to the American people and to Congress. He made the bed...he has to sleep in it.

The administration in Washington has a "cowboy" mentality in which they ride rough shod without any concern for the electorate. Where is the common sense? We are in an undeclared war that will drain America of ten trillion dollars, and we will have a military force in Iraq for the next 50 years or longer. It is mind boggling to think that President Bush would give a foreign entity the opportunity to manage the day-to-day operations of U.S. seaports.

in response to "Brokenhearted":
History repeats itself. Bin Ladin was our "legitimate ally" when the Soviets were our enemies. Good thing we didn't sell our ports to his family at that time. He was such a "friend to our military" and he served our purpose well in Afghanistan at that time.
Our world was forever changed on 9-11. We cannot afford to foster free trade at the expense of our national security.

The Big U.S. Companies have been outsourcing work to foreign Countries for years. Why not have foreign Countries outsource the work of the ports to american citizens. Oh, that is what has been going on for years. The security of the ports is totally controled by the U.S. Coast Guard, U.S. Customs and U.S. Home Land Security. This will not change. We live in a world economy. Please do your research on and use your God given brain to understand what is going on in the World and then make well thought out comments.

This president is run by big business. And big business is ONLY interested in the bottom line. They don't care about the USA or any other 'nationalistic' notion. It's about money people. Remember this when you vote.

Once again, big Brother wants to sell us out! This counrty is in big trouble. If the people do not take control soon, the U.S. will be a thing of the past! "we the people should take this counrty back."

The American citizen whom are unemployed or under employed should run the ports of America.
The USA government has gotten out of control, the taxpayers(the American workers pay the salaries of all elected government people) return the government to the workers of America, we want a government by the people for the people, we want all Americans employed, not foreigns whom want to destory America as we know it and others.
Kevin Walcott, Georgia (Sent Mar 10, 2006 7:02:51 AM)
I guess I must just be dense. Why such the uproar of outsourcing our ports to a foreign entity? Where was congress when my job was outsourced to India? Where is congress while our manufacturing capabilities are heading to China or Mexico? The majority of our Nation's leaders (Democrats and Republicans)view outsourcing as a good thing. "Good for who?" depends on if you're a worker or a CEO or politician.
The next "crises" won't be won because we control our ports. It will be lost because we don't build or invent anything any more.

"GOD bless America" i despise bush but you know what, george carlin said it best, it doesnt matter who you elect, its all the same, garbage in garbage out. Now with the port issue... Steve Berian of MA said it best, I don't want foreigners running ANY US port either, We can definatley do it ourselves. I work at the port and not like it would be difficult now, but the last thing i want on my mind is knowing that the arabs own more of our country than they already do...

As somebody who has never visited the USA I only have a onesided veiw of it(through others),which is pretty dire at the moment. I feel that what I have read and heard about the port deal leaves me shaking my head, and at times difficult defending it.I fail to see who runs a port really matters. For they would surely have to comply with the laws of that country. I also wonder if this will mean that other foreign owed ports/docks will now be asked to concide to a USA entity.I also heard on the radio that EVERY container would be subjected to a full security check before leaving the docks. Could someboby please tell me how it would be possible, and if this was to happen once taken over by a USA entity it is not being done now?.Or if the US goverment is so worried why not do as the French did some years back. Namely that ALL cargo from a particular destination passes through a designated port. Perhaps they should also check every peice of luggage that passes through Airports for I am sure that passengers will not mind waiting for a couple of more hours in line. Yes 9/11 was terrrible but most attacks on countries peopleand goverments are from from home grown Terrorists and not friendly goverments. Finally how do the people of America wish the rest of the world to see them as rasist and xenophobic or as a kind and generous people. I ask you the people of America to think what your people make up your great nation and not of their colour or religion. May your God go with you and hope that this mess doesn't leave to much of a bad taste in the other's mouth.

God Bless America, and our president. I for one am proud of the fact that we have leadership that is not influenced by the gay and pro-abortion agendas, and makes decisions based on what our morale fiber is supposed to be about. Where is the rest of Christian America at? He may not be perfect, but the same people who are bashing him are probably the ones who spit on our heroes returning from Vietnam. He speaks and listens to the same God as I do, and I, as the son of immigrants, am proud to have him as our leader.

Everytime things like this get blown out of proportion-we should be looking for what's getting swept under the rug, i.e. "Bait & Switch". If we are all up in arms about this ports deal, what's going on behind closed doors? That's what I worry about. Maybe this whole thing was orchestrated to happen the way it did; to focus our attention away from something else. That's how our govt. works, in my humble opinion.

Ok, so now it sounds like Dubai ports is going to turn the running of the ports over to an American company that they own instead of taking "direct" control!!!!! Politics does make strange bedfellows, does it not? Don't forget, whichever foreign company gets this contract to run our ports they also get a copy of our security (?) plans for those ports!!!!
Judy Arbogast, Dowagiac, MI (Sent Mar 10, 2006 12:18:09 AM)
Well now that we have everyones attention on the abated port deal. Take notice of which the majority of American Citizens are approving on the new April Fools Day, April 15th!! Know the Law. As the law maxim goes, "Ignorance of the law is no excuse". What will be your excuse this coming April 15th? LJ

It was Bill Clinton who put the Dubai deal together in the first place. He is still out there selling the country like he did when he was occupying the
white house, Why he is not mentioned.

When we say free trade and talk about equality in for all the nationality, we should implement it too. You can go to fight in Afganistan and Iraq (for those people)and do business in china, why not give our port security to DP why double standard ? Grow up American. Learn to love and trust humanity

I just find it hilarious that Bush supporters tried to make American suspicions about this somehow about racism towards Muslims, when no man has done more to instill hatred from Muslims than that very same man. But he'd need a brain to figure that one out, right?
