Abdul Rahman to be set free?

A diplomatic source tells NBC News:  In response to what the Afghan government is calling "the unprecedented international outcry," the Afghan government intends to release Abdul Rahman by Monday barring any unforseen circumstances. That would mean he would be out by Sunday U.S. time. This comes after a very tough call yesterday from Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice to Afghan President Hamid Karzai. In particular, Rice wants the issue resolved quickly before she has to testify at scheduled congressional hearings next week. The controversy threatens to blow up politically for the president at a time when billions of dollars in supplemental aid to pay for the Afghan war and reconstruction are pending.

The primary basis for the release would be the Afghan's claim that Rahman is not mentally competent to stand trial. However, Rice has warned Karzai that that is not an appropriate solution. In any case, he would probably be given security and taken out of the country -- most likely to Germany.

Secondly:  NBC News has learned that Karzai will submit nominees for a nine-member Afghan Supreme Court to parliament for confirmation, along with his new, 26-member cabinet. The Supreme Court -- once confirmed -- would help avoid future conflicts between the Afghan Constutition's guarantee of free speech and the underlying premises of Islamic law. However, that is long-term -- the court would likely not be confirmed by the parliament for at least a month.

I have to say that I am shocked, There is no moderation with these people, they live breath and teach hate. They will never change no matter how much blood we or them spill. I would go as far to say that the only way they would change is through education, less time in the mosque and more time in school. I dont know of any God that wants this kinda of worship. These people want world domination through a holy war, Christians & Jouse vrs Muslims, sad but true. Wake up leftest America this is our future.

Wake up Americans, this is a forced religion without choice. It is "forbidden" for anyone to leave [very similar to a gang] ..here in America as well... no freedom of thought ...welcome to islam.!! Wake up media!!

Religion of peace, huh? More like religion of "Join us or die!"

Of course they are going to release him. After all Afghanistan is the 51st state. It does make you wonder what all the money and dead American soldiers are for when democracy leads to laws like this on the books in Afghanistan and Iraq. Oops, I forgot that they were sovereign countries with different traditions and beliefs.

I am glad that President Karzai has seen wisdom in the words of Ms. Rice and others in the internatonal community. But, I also understand the predicament that Mr. Karzai and other Afghanis feel.

Nigeria has faced similar conflicts with lower courts interpreting Shar'ia law. Hopefully, the future Afghan Supreme Court will help overturn lower court decisions - just as Nigerian Islamic appeals courts have in some instances - to spare the lives of citizens seeking basic freedoms under draconian laws.

Unfortunately, the West must accept that these decisions will most likely be made as a result of "procedural errors" benefiting defendants -- not a sweeping interpretation of Shar'ia law to permit freedom of religion and speech.

What's strange about this, Muslim people say that the Islamic faith is all about peace, but once someone disagrees with their faith then it's "KILL THEM" "KILL THE INFIDELS". I guess that they don't know anything about their religion. You Think?

Of course that's not OK, because they think only one way is right - their way - and nothing else matters. If we did behad a convert to Islam they would be bombing our embassies and shouting "Death to America" in the streets again. Isn't it odd how people who don't speak English know how to shout that phrase? Even when Denmark was the target, they blindly shouted "Death to America". Where do the English-language banners come from that you see in demonstrations? Who's teaching them?

In a way it's rather comical, because every time they do it, they only prove the truth of what the world says about their brand of Islam. Violence and threats of violence are their first answers to everything, and if Westerners aren't available, killing their own countrymen will do just fine. We just push the Islamic Militant button and "Bingo!" they come out of the sand dunes to rile up the ignorant masses, stage a few demonstrations, burn some businesses and/or flags, kill a few people, and then melt away until the next insult, real or imagined.

When I read about what Mr. Rahman is going through, I thought of Paul and Sylis. Paul (Saul) was transformed by the Word of God and became one of God's champion. He was arrested and jailed but still praised God. Jesus did say that people that follow him will be persecuted and even killed.

The one thing that gets me about this is that do they not get that if they kill him he will always be martyred? They will be filling all that had been written?

I know that I join Thousands that are praying for him. Thank you for doing this story. It just shows that evil & egnorance still lives. I know that God has a plan for him and may be, just may be this would open the eyes of other people that follow islam to seek God in a new way. You know, one that is non violent.

I have taken a rather objective, pragmatic approach to the developments in the "War on Terror", until this.

If this man dies at the hands of an Afghan court, under a government we supported. We as a nation have completely failed in the last 5 years.

If they do release him, that's wonderful, but they better have security make sure he gets out of that country alive.

I cannot believe this is happening. Did they learn nothing from the Taliban?

I am a Christian. I think this all is terrible. It is a sign of the times. This kind of stuff was predicted thousands of years ago. And I dare anyone from Islam to come and try to cut my head off. I will kick their butts. And I am not talking a kid-buttkickin either. I am 6'4" and 260 lbs. I will kick their butts.

So, if they don't want a butt-kickin, then give the guy some cash, and send him our way. We will make him feel right at home.

And while we are at it, let's just ask Mexico to join the US so there aren't any illegal aliens anymore.

Regardless of Rahman's pending release, the fact remains that they were going to execute him for converting to Christianity. We tossed out the Taliban and we shouldn't be supporting the new fundamentalist Islamic government in Afghanistan that does not share our belief in freedom of religion. We should leave and let them run their own country. If the terrorists return to Afghanistan, we should return and get rid of them. Then we should leave.

Officially they should exile or banish him. That way he would still be "punished" for his actions which are against their law but it would keep the international community off their back. Germany or another country I am sure would let him become a citizen. I'm sure most of the people in the US would welcome him. Also there is a large portion of people who hate the US anyways, why not send this "heretic" to us...

Has anyone asked the clerics if it would be ok to behead a convert to islam? Fair is FAIR
