Weekend update
It is axiomatic, with varying degrees of seriousness, that when we travel overseas, a substantial story breaks in the United States. When we were covering the Mandela election in South Africa, President Richard Nixon died. When we were covering the Pope's visit to Havana, Monica-Gate broke in the pages of Newsweek. Today, while the NBC Olympic compound was preoccupied with the departure of Michelle Kwan, an AP News Alert told us of a "shooting accident" involving Vice President Dick Cheney on a hunting trip in Texas. It is safely the most bizarre story we have tonight, second to the new record for snowfall in the City of New York. Most of our traveling party has been on the phone all day with loved ones at home, green with envy that we are missing this substantial blanket of white over the weekend. In my house, it meant instructing my son by phone on exactly where to shovel a path for the dog to negotiate the steps off the back porch. Others are asking their significant snowed-in others to relate the stillness and other-worldliness at home. Kevin Tibbles has forged new ground with a primer on all things Canadian, and enjoyed some quality time with our producer Subrata De, as proud a native of Thunder Bay as there has ever been. We will originate again tonight from a downtown piazza, and will like most at home settle in to watch the Olympics coverage tonight. We hope you can join us.

The VP was on a private ranch, on a weekend on his own private time, with his freinds and not any other public figures, and there was an accident. So where is the news in this story? Move on people. We have radical Islamic people trying to destroy our very way of life, and we are talking about this????

the accidental shooting of a member in a hunting group is equivalent to the death of a president of the USA?
And you guys wonder why you are losing ground? Odd

It is no surprise that David Gregory has not been obnoxious, supposedly, prior to this point. It becomes an enduring position to be able to day-in and day-out confront the Official Obfuscator in Scott McClellan and not get "RoveRage", disgruntled, and the like. In fact, it is heart warming that it took this long before Mr. Gregory demonstrated this supposed obnoxiousness. Afterall, these guys in this White House understand torture and to be submiited, subjected, and confronted with Scott McClellan or Ari Fleischer on a daily basis is tortuous enough! You are a stronger man than myself, David Gregory, for being able to withstand this psychological trauma.

......from now on, you murderers, roppers, and other criminals...you need to call the reporters before you commit the crime......so they can be on site and get that big scoop!
Dick Gregory and other reporters....just because you do not like this Adm., is no reason to dis-respect the office! All of you, are disgusting!
The new catch phrase, "Reporters have a culture of rudeness."
Barbara Cook, Catlettsburg, Ky (Sent Feb 14, 2006 7:10:50 AM)
Oh boo-hoo for the press. I can't believe that big baby Gregory. Let's give the family time to absorb this tragedy of the accidental shooting. Besides, everything takes more time on the weekends. The press will drag this out just to hurt the VP and the President.
The TV media just continues down this spiral of irrelevance...let’s have another story about Guantanamo Bay and the so-called ‘abuses’. Oh, wait they are beating that drum again.

Saw the poor justification on the news tonight for holding the VP "hunting accident" for 18 or so hours before telling the press. Well, some bright journalist should mosey on over to the hospital of the victim and see if they can get their hands on the victim's blood test (they always do one) and see if those good ol boys were drinking or not quite sober from the night before. If I were to guess, I'de say about 18hours is what was needed for everyone to sober up....

Good news about all the snow is...we get to stay indoors and watch NBC all day long!

Why didn't VP Cheney verify what he was shooting at before he bolding blundered? Hunter safety 101, don't shoot unless you are sure of what you are shooting at. As far as not getting the information for 24 hours, so is the day in the life of the endless government cover-ups. Not surprising.
Brad Hippert (Sent Feb 13, 2006 8:28:42 PM)
The story on the Vice-President just shows how biased the mainstream media continues to be. It is becoming much more difficult to even watch the nightly news with Bryan Williams due to the obvious bias against the current Administration. What ever happened to being polite? David Gregory is becoming more and more hostile. I guess I should just stick to Fow News.
Kyle Coldren, Chesapeake, VA (Sent Feb 13, 2006 7:04:19 PM)
So what if the Vice President or his people didn't get the word out immediately on the shooting.
God forbid they waited 24 hours and gave the report to a local hometown news station.
Did you see one of your own David Gregory at the White House debrief this morning? He was down right obnoxious. Who says the White House press has to get the story first.
No wonder people have no respect for the media. They try to make mountans out of mole hills.
Reyna DePrater, Lompoc, Ca. (Sent Feb 13, 2006 5:22:33 PM)
I understand what the big dust up is about with the VP and his accident. Why is not reporting the accident immediately such a big deal? The media types in the White House must have ahd a real boring weekend, because outside of the VP, his staff and the family of the man injured, this is a real no-story. Surely there are other problems these journalists could cover that could shed light on real problems like where are the homeless children in NYC sleeping and keeping warm in the blanket of snow, poor education standards established by Bush admin., real solutions to fixing the energy crisis, etc...

I've been reading the comments posted since Friday and am amazed that the normally news oriented readers/writers are responding so negatively to the Olympic coverage. Anyone out there seen Munich? Anyone out there old enough to remember it? Yes,there is so much to love about the promise of the Olympics, but there is a lot more to it than there used to be. For me, the image of S and N Korea coming in together was VERY hopeful. The images of some truly impoverished small countries sending even one athlete was inspiring. Seen Iran and Israel march so closely was worth noting.
Keep noting your observatiobs, Mr. Williams. You're there, we're not. This is a lot more than touching, treacley 3 minute "color commentary" on someone's tragic/adversity riddled past to this moment of glory. And kudos to you for not taking some of the more snipish comments to heart. I always enjoy reading the ones that begin, "You will not print this..."
Ultimate professional.

The vice president goes out and shoots someone.
The press doesn't find out for 24 hours.
Don't you have anyone covering the vp? Is the ranch he was at one of his undisclosed locations?
Maybe it's time to have someone cover the vp or at least set up pool coverage with the other networks and papers.

My message is for Brian Williams. I am wondering, what is it about the VP's hunting accident that is so "bizarre" to you Sir? You have been to Iraq, Afganistan, and countless other dangerous field environments around the globe. Accidents happen everywhere. But especially so when gunpowder and bullets are involved. How does this seem so bizarre to you? I really like you as a reporter. Your work is really top-notch and always believeable. But you seem to be straining to find the right word???? I don't know what to make of that comment. Can you explain? Just tell me it is semantics and not some kind of New York vs the South (uncouth, beer drinking, bubbaland) kind of thing. Thanks, G. Keith Gilchrist
G. Keith Gilchrist, Houston, Texas (Sent Feb 12, 2006 8:13:12 PM)
I can't believe that everyone is crying about Michelle Kwan quitting. When she PETITIONED to get on the team, you should have known she was toast. And yet, not once have any of you mentioned that the judges and officals at the heart of last Olympic's ice skating scandel are back in, while the folks who blew the whistle on the sport's dirty secret have been tossed out. Also, here in Vermont, hunters are charged when they shoot someone while hunting. Is the Vice President going to be charged, you think?
