The return of "hanging chads"?
About four dozen reporters and a battalion of camera crews waited breathlessly outside the Cannon House Caucus Room this afternoon for word of who would emerge victorious in the race to be the new House Republican Leader, replacing former leader Rep. Tom DeLay of Texas.
Ballots were being counted and word was expected any moment when a top Republican aide slipped out of the room to quietly inform reporters that, upon counting the ballots, they found there were more cast than there were actually members in the room.
Perhaps Congress has a ways further to go on ethical reform.
We'll stay on the story and be sure to let you know how things are finally resolved and what, if any, explanation is offered for the extra ballots.
UPDATE:
House Republican officials now say there was one extra ballot cast - by the Republican delegate from Puerto Rico. Puerto Rico does not have a vote on the House floor, so they are not used to the delegate voting. After some discussion it was determined that under conference rules, his vote should be allowed. However, because none of the three candidates received the necessary 117 votes to win the postion outright, a runoff race with the two top ballot getters is being held. At this time, the conference is still in the process of re-voting.
ANOTHER UPDATE:
In the runoff ballot, underdog John Boehner of Ohio upset Roy Blunt of Missouri in the race to be House Majority Leader. The vote was 122-109.

Can we say corruption?
This is the group that calls themselves the moral majority?
How can they say they stand for morals when they are a bunch of cheating liars?
I get stealing the election from the Democrats but whats with cheating each other?
I feel really sorry for them - how embarrasing.
Most of all I feel sorry for all the people who go along with them and don't even take the time to pay attention to this sort of news! I am outraged by the last couple days of events...State of the union...etc.
Wake up America!

Susie from Winchester, TN pretty well sumed it up for me with her comment regarding allowing the supreme court to decide this internal election. :: big grin:: Thanks Susie!!
This fall will be interesting provided congress gets around to passing legislation which will assist states financially so that voting equipment is uniform throughout all states and provides a paper trail which can confirm election results!!

Gee, more ballots than members voting! Is this the "new reformation" coming out of a Republican Congress? We the people had better wise up pretty damn quick in order to save ourselves. They cut funds while giving more money to an ever losing war effort. God help us. We need it.

The Republican did the best they could. They could have done worse by reelecting Tom DeLay. This is the first time the for sale sign hangs outside the white House and the sold sign outside the House and Senate. This happened while the people slept. Wake up America or there won't be anything to wake up to.

The 55,000,000 of us who voted for this administration in 2004, even after witnessing the previous four years' debacle are directly responsible for this disaster in Washington. Now we need to find the courage to admit we failed our Republic and change things starting in November, 2006.

Hey maybe they need to go back to school with the no child left behind, and learn some math, you are not suppose to have more votes then are there. Only 2 more years of this I hope....

PLEASE, do not keep this one out, May the Gods hold this congress in thier hands to do what should be done for the people who send them there.

Why can't you people get over the elections of 2000 and 2004...It is actually quite sad to see comments about these elections 6 years later...Do you really think we would be better off under a Gore or Kerry administration...Give me a break...

Is anyone else amazed at the fact that the Republican party is in charge of The White House, The Senate, The House And The Supreme Court.Yet our country is in the absolute worst shape fiscally, emotionally, health wise, energy and any other catagory you can thimk of. Aren't we tired of The Republicans using our Lord as a SMOKE SCREEN for anything they want to do.

Republicans chose a leader who is not beholden to the K Street Lobbyists like Roy Blunt was. It also shows the fear that Republican Congressman have concerning the Abramoff/Delay scandal. The election proves that FEAR trumps money. The fact that Blunt was chosen by the Speaker and Delay as interim leader was his kiss of death. It will be interesting to see if the Speaker survives.

maybe we should let the supreme court decide this election too...but with Roberts and Alito on the bench..Delay would be reinstated

"Perhaps you should examine your own ethics regarding your personal comments when reporting."
You mean like they do on Fox?
How about:
Some people say congress has a ways further to go on ethical reform.
Yup, much, much better.

In 1995 Boehner passed checks from tobacco lobbyists to other Congressmen on the House floor, while lawmakers were considering ending tobacco subsities.
Between 2000 and now Boner has gone on 31 trips paid for by special interest groups.

I'll reserve judgement until Mr. Boehner has performed in his new role. Quite frankly, I doubt he can be worse that who he is replacing.
M. Kinsella (Sent Feb 2, 2006 5:59:19 PM)
Boehner's selection represents a new beginning and a fresh start for the GOP caucus. He is a man of unimpeachable integrity whose midwestern values will serve the nation well.

America needs change; Congress isn't working effectively or well to keep citizens safe, free, or prospering. The Members don't seem to "get it."

The corruption that exsists in the government is the fault of "we the people." We elect them and keep sending them back to steal more. Until "We the people" throw them all out and take back our country we have no right to complain. To see the problem with American government, look in the mirror

I hope John Boehner is honest or is this too much to ask? Is there one honest person in the U S Congress, Republican or Democrat? I'm ready for a 3rd party and have been ready for some time. It couldn't be any worse than the two we have and there's a chance it might be better.
Bob Giere, Dallas, Texas (Sent Feb 2, 2006 4:59:58 PM)
Gee, I guess your snide comment about ethics turned out to be your own prejudice at work.
Steve Mintpn (Sent Feb 2, 2006 4:21:06 PM)
I sure hope Boehner is not a DeLay/Blunt clone. If so, good luck to Congress on that one. The Democrat's should be in charge of everything and the Rublican's should be booed out of the chambers. If you keep up this charade of bait and switch, the people will clean out Congress and start anew. We are not going to let Bush make Congress irrelvant so he can undermine the constitution to achieve own personal objectives.

And these are the same guys who ridiculed thousands of Florida voters after the 2000 presidential election... They don't even know their own rules. Why am I not surprised? (Expect comments about the delegate from Puerto Rico not supporting the troops.)

Talk about a 'Culture of Corruption'! The Republicans even try to steal internal elections.

It is a pity that the representative from PR and PR itself hasn't been inducted as a state. Makes one wonder about the rights and representation of the island for taxes, etc.
