The Daily Nightly from NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams

About this blog

The Daily Nightly began on May 31, 2005. As Brian wrote in his first post it aims to provide a narrative of the broadcast day and a window into the editorial process at NBC Nightly News. Brian weighs in every weekday and NBC News correspondents and producers post regularly.

Brian Williams became the seventh anchor and managing editor in the history of NBC Nightly News on December 2, 2004. Read his full biography.

The day after

Back in New York following our State of the Union coverage. Today the President took his message on the road (as is customary for The Morning After) to Nashville, where he expanded on and repeated some of the same themes of last night, and where he paraphrased the plain-English argument for domestic eavesdropping that he used in the speech. The range of coverage has been interesting to watch, from Powerlineblog's assessment of the President as "Churchillian" to critiques on the other side that accused him of re-hashing old material and raising either conflicting or too-modest themes. The radiosphere and blogosphere have both been rather active today on the topic of T-shirts... the banned kind.  Pete Williams, who covers the law for us, will look at the question being asked around the country today (following the arrest of Cindy Sheehan and the detention of a Congressional spouse who was wearing a shirt with a pro-troops sentiment) concerning why there isn't free speech via clothing in the House Gallery. Late today, as Capitol Hill producer Mike Viqueira posted below, there's been an interesting development in this story.

We'll look at how some swing voters viewed the President's remarks last night, and at the vivid displays of deep partisanship before our very eyes.

Also tonight, the Katrina hearings on Capitol Hill -- while New Orleans sits there, again we look back at those awful initial days of the disaster. Tonight: what are people saying now about demands they were making for help back then?

We have also just watched the swearing-in ceremony for Justice Samuel Alito... Chief Justice Roberts read the oath as the President who appointed both men looked on.

A personal note: Bob Schieffer and I found ourselves on the same Shuttle flight back to New York this morning, where he also spotted ABC News President David Westin prior to boarding. It gave us a chance to convey personally the best wishes of all of the staff members on both broadcasts -- who are cheering for a speedy recovery for both Bob Woodruff and Doug Vogt. Perhaps the best moment came a short time later, while I was taking part in our morning editorial conference call from the shuttle lounge... separated by one faux-leather lounge seat from my friend Bob, he gestured, clearly daring me to hand him the phone, and so I did. He thus became the first-ever CBS Evening News anchor to participate in the NBC Nightly News morning conference call. I would have loved to have been on the New York end of the call when that unmistakable voice broke in on the roll call of various story pitches for the day. As our Executive Producer John Reiss reportedly later said to the gathering, "now THAT was a moment."

We hope you can join us for the broadcast tonight.

Bush telling us that we are addicted to oil is like the drug pusher telling his clients that it is their fault for being on coke! Remember the types of neighborhoods the drug dealer inhabits and look for similar traits coming from this White House or Oil Crack House, its is all the same habit, thanks to this oilman!

I say "bully" for Bian to include a tidbit on his blog about the phone conference call by putting on a true competetor and yet also a friend on the line to a suprised group of NBC folks discussing the news format for tonight's broadcast. Well done Brian And you did it your way. This is one reason for reading it and keping up with news behind the news It makes the news more meaningful and humanizes the content.

The connection of George W. Bush and his State of the Union Address being defined as Churchillian is about as goofy as the cartoon-character Goofy being imbued with Churchillian statesmanship. It strains credulity that this recent speech contained anything more palpable than mere words stricken of wordly meaning. If one compared this recent speech with FDR's "Day of Infamy Speech" one would scream "Water" as Bush's marshmellow pablum was so bad it pained the ears to listen. Let alone his delivery makes a Toastmaster graduate cry, "Fowl" for his lack of delivery punch. Churchillian? More like chinchillian after the rodent!

Thank you for keeping the devastation of Katrina in the forefront. As someone who loved visiting New Orleans which is a place that is unlike any other place in the world, the need to keep those who suffered in our country is important to know.

It is really good to know that NBC news isn't divisive as this country has become. I'm glad to know that Schiffert is welcomed in a morning confernce. What a great example. Look forward to tonight and WHERE IS KEITH MILLER?

The T-shirt issue, the illegal wiretaps:
I did not understand until now that " spreading freedom/democracy" meant taking it away from the Americans and distributing to the rest of the world! How generous!

Being a devoted viewer and post reader I sense a drift to the right. Does BALANCED journalisim open a door or at least leave it a jar for some future possible opportunities or is it just the accepted quid quo pro formation. Perhaps it is good material for discussion, sure hope it is, otherwise one can wonder if the morals we are taught and have fought for and we are all still fighting for are slowly but assuridly drifting out to the sea of tyranny. Our fine journalist should be allowed to do what they do without interference from influnces. Personally I believe division of thought is healthy for democracy and individual freedoms. Its the complacency and mindless obedeince that threatens every true American. Our media is the only check left in our quest for individual rights. We lose that, what shall we become? What signals our we sending to the world to our children? Do we really want to accept that greed and self abosorbtion are in our nature and is to be tolerated? Was referencing the Brit's proper reporting tonight providing perspective or just plain blantant biased tabloid filler? Only those players in the know really know and they want to keep it that way. It is appreciated that at least these posts most of them I pray are getting through without censorship.
Now is the time for all good men to come fourth and be heard before silence echos history yet again. For all our devoted dedicate true Americans putting there lives on the line every day to get the truth out right alongside our young men and women in uniform and whom never receive any tangible recognition not even a Medal of Journalisim Excellence for their scarifices I say we can do better, we must do better.
The flag of the camera and the mic must fly at full staff. Truth and justice must prevail or no one will enjoy freedom. Bloodshed is not a solution, silence breeds corruption of principles. One can try too hard to project objectivity that it can hasten the fragility of the fracture of fact. Lets keep our lenses polished and the lights on. Last man out carry's the torch.

Good to see NBC Nightly News and CBS Evening News is bonding together! Would be very funny if NBC suddenly ran out of substitutes and have to call on Mr. Bob Schiffer to sub in for Brian. Now THAT would be a moment!! Hahahahaha.

While watching your broadcast tonight like I have done every night for 20 plus years I was struck by something odd tonight.

During your coverage of the tragic shooting in Chino, Ca. an obvious and blatant omission appears to have been purposely perpetrated by someone in the NBC News organization.

On THIS particular broadcast, reporting on THIS particular incident, in THIS particular case NO mention was made of the RACE of neither the shooting officer nor his victim. Was this a simple mistake?

Because if recent reporting events hold true, an all out effort is always made to make sure a WHITE officer's race is always identified and placed in the forefront when involved in a like tragedy.

Please assure me this was a simple oversight as I look to your broadcast for simple, truthful reporting. Though I feel and believe race should have NO determination or factor in the outcome of any enforcement action, when you (NBC) choose to play to one crowd you (NBC) must play to all, otherwise we might as well call you FOX NEWS.

Thought the partisan bickering and applausing last night dooms our country to no progress for a long time. Brian, I enjoyed your essay on why Kathrina was covered. Please do one on detriment on partisan politics on our country.

Want to bet that the story lineup changed shortly after the conference call? In a world full of serious events, it's nice to have a little fun now and again. And Brian, you're not the only one who wishes they were on the 30 Rock side of that phone call.

Brokaw never would have handed over that phone.
