The Daily Nightly from NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams

About this blog

The Daily Nightly began on May 31, 2005. As Brian wrote in his first post it aims to provide a narrative of the broadcast day and a window into the editorial process at NBC Nightly News. Brian weighs in every weekday and NBC News correspondents and producers post regularly.

Brian Williams became the seventh anchor and managing editor in the history of NBC Nightly News on December 2, 2004. Read his full biography.

Quoting here...

Here now, as reported on MSNBC.com, the quote of the day from U.S. skier Bode Miller, who finished sixth today and has failed to earn a medal in four outings.

"One of the good things about my career is I have such extensive knowledge, so I always go as hard as I can. Some guys can go 70-80 percent and get results, but I wouldn't do that. If things went well, I could be sitting on four medals, maybe all of them gold."

NOW THE NEWS...

Tonight we'll begin with some combination of the following: the new terrorist tapes that are making the rounds and a look at what they contain, the fight over a contract to protect some of America's major shipping ports, the ongoing tragedy in the Philippines, and what could be a coming oil shock due to events in Nigeria.

Also tonight, our look at one of the enduring brand names from Torino, which will allow us to repeat a minor but enduring moment in cinematic history. We'll have the latest from the Olympic Winter Games, and we'll say farewell to one of the great figures of sports broadcasting, Curt Gowdy.

In Turin, or Torino, it turns out: the Italians don't recognize Presidents day. Nor does the news calendar... so we're hoping you will join us for our broadcast this Monday night.

All Bode Miller has brought to the Games are attitude and alcohol. He may be in his early 20's (just past legal drinking age) but he sounds like an alcoholic: "If things went well, I could be sitting on four medals." "I always go as hard as I can. Some guys can go 70-80 percent..."

Well, you went as hard as you could and things didn't go well. So what's left. Excuses.

but like a lot of bode's teammates he simply has not gotten it done. i don't know what it is about this u.s. team. it's one thing to lose when someone is better but the way some have been losing is just- i don't know- as former athlete (who was not good i might add), i can at least say i didn't choke or celebrate too soon or screw up and someone flat out beat me- although there have been some good efforts and surprise wins from the u.s i do realize that- it just feels different that's all to watch how some of these guys have lost , again it's not the losing, it's the way you lose. finally, say what you will about the dislike between speedskaters davis and chad but at least they've gotten medals and are delivering

After hearing about the passing of Curt Gowdy & reflecting on the presentation of the sporting events he brought into our home over the years, it became obvious to me that the perception of achievement in athletics has changed for the worse. At one time, making the an olympic team was a great achievemnet in & of itself. Now it seems any olympian who has had success prior to the games has accomplished little if they don't medal. Success should still be measured by the some of all things, the dedication, training, sacrifice, not simply by the number of medals collected by the end of the day.Getting to the olympics is one of the major achievements any athlete could aspire for. Most recently, the expectations of many commentators & the media in general regarding the measure of an athletes success seems to be solely focused on the collection of hardware. I would imagine Mr. Gowdy would have enjoyed watching a well played game that ended in a tie over a rout that ended with a medal winner. It's not whether you win or lose but how you play the game

Well, Brian ... I'm sorry NBC chose to show some very uninteresting Olympics commercials/coverage instead of your broadcast this Monday evening (85 percent of your usual Nightly News Broadcast time was devoted to commercials about what was going to be shown later during the Evening Olympics coverage). For the first time in YEARS, I watched another network to get today's news ... you have some good competition out there (just giving you a heads up). I hope NBC will return to broadcasting the Nightly News tomorrow. If not, well -- the other networks are showing their evening news broadcasts as usual. Someone suggested that maybe you went ahead and did your broadcast to show on the NetCast; however, the NetCast format is unfriendly to my dial-up, so that isn't an option for me. Neither is cable/satellite, since I can't afford to pay those monthly charges and support my insulin habit, as well.

I'm sure ya'll had no control over the fact that NBC chose to show Olympic coverage over broadcasting the Nightly News ... such a shame, since I'm sure I'm not the only one who switched over to either ABC or CBS to get the news this evening.

Brian!
What are they doing to you?
You appear to be aging like one of our presidents! Tell your handlers we don't need you to look like a 60 year old to earn our respect. Your outfit and hairdo aside from this evenings news .... We love you as a 40 something.

Am I the only one that is getting really fed up with the pathos that is passing a reporting when it comes to the Olympics? Does every sport personality have a tragic story or have an obnoxious side to throw us on the screen? I am so happy when someone from out in left field gets a medal and no one has a sob story or a smear campaign to distort the accomplishment. I do wish all the contestants wanted the gold and showed the effort, even if they don't make it. I thought that was what watching the Olympics was all about. Rooting for your team (USA) and seeing with pride their effort. I have seen an awful lot of young people not focused on the outcomes.

What happend to not releasing results in the Daily Nightly, Brian?

Bode is just Bode. He lives and plays for the game not the glory. I for one respect that. He's young and he'll be around along time. I just hope the media doesn't turn people against him because he lost. Being a good loser is part of being a good winner remember that I know Bode will.
