Rebuilding Waveland

Waveland, Miss. is an amazing place, but these days it's for all the wrong reasons. The destruction from Hurricane Katrina's storm surge left behind scenes of destruction that are spellbinding. I have been there several times over the course of the past five months and each time I see a new depth of the devastation.

So the question becomes: Where do you begin when you have to start over? Our story tonight looks at what the community chose to fix first... A hospital? A fire station? A Home? No...

The work took only a few days and was done by volunteers... Volunteers who pay their own way and cover their own expenses, yet who say the experience makes them richer not poorer. Kids Around the World is a faith- based group, and as the name implies, does its work all over the globe. The premise; every child deserves to be a kid and even in the toughest of times the laughter of children can work wonders.

It's an inspiring piece. I hope you can catch it.

Editor's note: MSNBC.com set up shop in Waveland and Bay St. Louis, Miss. soon after Katrina hit. Their coverage, Rising from Ruin, can be viewed here.

I'm am so happy to see that NBC is still keeping the devistation of Huricane Katrina in our minds. The Goverment as I see it today has not and will not do anything for the people of this country unless it will result in votes.
I have learned one very important lesson from Huricane Katrina, that is to never depend on your government for assistance. We all must be able to fend for ourselfs. Please do not be clouded by the idea that they will assist in disasters of any kind.
God help us if we are ever attacked on a large scale, it would be catastrophic.

Can someone explain to me why we can spend millions of taxpayers dollars to rebuild cities we intentionally bombed, but we don't have the money, nor the resouces to rebuild cities at home? It seems that we are so busy policing the world, we can't take care of our own. Yes, we are quit the Super Power, aren't we. Shameful.

N'Orleans should quit whining. It was a corrupt city and states and so remains. Americans, especially Floridians, shouldn't have to pay for the reconstruction of this underwater cesspool.

Brian, the New Orleans story is gone. God and the government should help those who help themselves. Your network gives too much attention to Choclate Ray Nagin.
What about us Floridians who suffered through Wilma? What about Mississippi?
For shame.

I congratulation you on commenting about the volunteer efforts in the hurricane zone. In December, two of your reporters traveled toward each other one from the east and the other from the west covering the broad spectrum of damage. One reporter commented about fantastic the faith based efforts. I would like to see some stories done on the work accomplished by groups traveling to the churches in the hurricane zone including where the people were from, the type of work they have and are doing, and the problems the churches in the region are facing with providing for the volunteers. I do know that our church has send and is continuing to send work groups to Covington, LA; we have gotten many reports from them. The extend of the damage is daunting; the work is exhausting; the local church providing housing for the volunteers is both rewarded and suffering. Yes, government aid should be extensive; however, private aid to areas ourside of New Orleans has also been extensive, and from our church reports, so greatly appreciated.

Judy
