The Daily Nightly from NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams

About this blog

The Daily Nightly began on May 31, 2005. As Brian wrote in his first post it aims to provide a narrative of the broadcast day and a window into the editorial process at NBC Nightly News. Brian weighs in every weekday and NBC News correspondents and producers post regularly.

Brian Williams became the seventh anchor and managing editor in the history of NBC Nightly News on December 2, 2004. Read his full biography.

Presidential humor, take II

Comics say if you have to explain the joke it isn't funny. Though I am clearly not a comic, I am having that feeling after reading the two comments about my post today. My point in writing about the humor that is always present at presidential news conferences was simply to share a slice of what we typically do not explore in our reporting on NBC News. That's where we do all the serious stuff. I see this blog as a way to share observations you might not get elsewhere. My point was not to report on the substance. I do that in my broadcast pieces, like the one I am preparing for tomorrow morning on "Today."

What I would truly be interested in is how both David Gregory and you, as White House Press Corp journalists, feel after a 14-round bout with the Official Obfuscator himself, Scott McClellan. In following David Gregory, for instance, through the Ari Flesicher years and then following up with him recently with McClellan, I am of the opinion that David is getting fits to the point that there must be a punching bag which he uses as a substitute for one McClellan, things are getting so bad with true information gathering. Both of you should write a story about what really gallss the two of you in not getting the "down-low" at the White House. That would make a very good book to read!

hi kelly! this is my 1st time on a blog here.I think it's a refreshing change for humor to be used, this somehow makes a presendent more likeable, than to be serious all the time.I've always enjoyed your reporting, since from about 1995.

Presidential humor, no matter how lame or unfunny, shows that they are human, have flaws and actually have a personality. It is refreshing to see, especially these days. I am furious at our current leader but when I see some of the lighter side, I tend not to despise him on a personal level.

That behind the scenes stuff we don't see on the broadcast is precisely the reason I love this blog so much. It not only opens a window into the people and the stories you cover, but into the editorial process itself. Keep up the good work, all of you!

Dear Kelly,

I was THRILLED to have your comments on the lighter side of your business. Humor is a uniquely human behavior that provides a valuable glimpse into others. Our world would be flat were it not for that clever quip, a poke in the ribs, a burst of laughter and a tinge of irony.

Clearly, some people have no sense of humor.

PS: I see no need for you to defend your record as a serious journalist. Thanks for your contribution to our news. Don't let the bloggies get you down.

Not to worry, I watched the press conference and I think your blog hit the high points. There wasn't any new information given aside from the humor.

Mrs. O'Donnell I read the comments and I don't think its you I think its Bush. Right now with all the lies and young soldiers dying for an invasion, spying on Americans, torture, fake documents, corruption etc. The fact that George Bush shows his face is painfull. Our country is in pain because of the mess we're in and a joke wont help. We need a leader who will get the US back to being a respected honest country again. I know before the Bush Administration we could laugh and smile but we can't now because we're losing everything that made this country great and the face of the distruction is Bush. Don't blame yourself because we can't laugh now.

I always enjoying reading your blogs, Kelly! Thank you, and keep them coming.
