Why should the media apologise? One of the paramount responsibilities of the media is to report news irrespective of it's nature... especially in situations that unfolds right before our eyes. Breaking news are almost always subject to change as new details emerge. What is important is that the media make the necessary corrections as facts become known, which they have done. I am appalled at the behaviour of those who are quick to blame the media and make a mountain out of a mole hill. Killing the messenger won't substantiate anything, so why waste time?

I went to bed feeling a miracle had occured and was devastated to hear the heartbreaking truth from my husbanc the next morning. I cannot imagine how the familes felt after the horrible mistake in reporting.

Maybe the news media should just use their standard line; "It came from a confidential source that 12 people are alive". Then whether they are USA today or Dan Rather, they can deny responsibility. Thank goodness we are moving to bloggers to bring responsibility and honesty to the mainstream media.

I love how the headlines now read "Official apologizes to families in mine tragedy"... When it should read, "Media apologizes..."
