The Daily Nightly from NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams

About this blog

The Daily Nightly began on May 31, 2005. As Brian wrote in his first post it aims to provide a narrative of the broadcast day and a window into the editorial process at NBC Nightly News. Brian weighs in every weekday and NBC News correspondents and producers post regularly.

Brian Williams became the seventh anchor and managing editor in the history of NBC Nightly News on December 2, 2004. Read his full biography.

Emotional Hangover

"EMOTIONAL HANGOVER." Producer Rich Latour used those words in our afternoon editorial meeting to describe the residual feeling in Room 216 of the Hart Senate Office Building this morning as the Alito hearings resumed.  The "hangover" speaks to the way things ended yesterday: with Mrs. Alito in tears...in a story that was widely misreported.  While initial Web and wire stories got the story wrong, it is even inaccurately re-told in some of today's papers.  Either way, Judge Alito is no longer testifying (after 18 hours over 3 days) and has now been replaced at the main table by panels of upwards of 30 witnesses for and against his nomination. Early predictions by analysts remain in effect: he will be confirmed barring a last-minute surprise. It’s all about the math now.  We'll have it covered tonight.

At or near the top of our broadcast tonight will be the President's return visit to New Orleans and the Mississippi coast, and the plans there for re-building.  The President became emotional at the conclusion of his remarks this afternoon in Mississippi.  David Gregory is travelling with him and will have our report.

The Web site americablog.blogspot.com is out with a rather stunning story (first reported, as they point out, in the Washington Post) having to do with cell phones and privacy (or the lack of it).  At some point, we will air our own version of this story.  Perhaps sooner rather than later.

Also in our broadcast tonight: what we're calling "Miller Time"...Bode Miller apologizes for his ill-chosen words about skiing under the influence. I spent time with him recently for an upcoming segment on the Olympics...you'll see some of that conversation tonight.

Also: this weather we're having.  Depending on where you live, there's a good chance the weather is making news. From Seattle (where, despite many visits, I have never seen Mount Rainier...but am told that it exists) where rainfall is approaching the all-time record, to New York, where it was a spring day. Mike Taibbi will sum it all up for us.

We hope you can join us.

The president of international Olympics met my country's president the other day and was telling him to push the atheletes. I assume, he is a nice fella :P

I missed last night's broadcast and don't know what you mean by inaccurate reporting about Mrs. Alito. A web search revealed no answers. 'Splain yourself Mr. Williams!

Well, Glad to hear that trial of Judge Alito is almost over. Now the Jury or should I say Senate Judiciary panel, can move onto deliberations. The behavior of Senators on both sides of the aisle has been shameful. The petty arguments and the showboating, my daughter and her 3rd grade classmates are better behaved.

Where is the decorum in the Senate?

Let's move on Senators and confirm!

I don't like snow but I do like the young man Bode Miller at lease he's real. As for Alito we know its hard for the truth about someone to be annouced to the world but he will do what he was sent to do that is abolish women's rights, civil rights and abortions.
Woman of today will have to now look at history as to how to get back their rights. Civil rights well thats a shame as we call our country a democary/freedom but we are who we are. Now we'll return to secret abortions with hangers I guess our elected official don't mine that. If the people of this country continue to set back and watch while our country to taken over so be it. It was a good 206 year run. We started stronge with George Washington and ended weak with George Bush.

Hope, we do not get same rhetoric about Iran, as we did about Iraq in 2002. Iran is no military threat, and a peace plan would help us get out of Iraq quagmire. Iran is part of IEAE, unlike India, Israel, and Pakistan.
