Ayman al-Zawahri's 'proof of life' tape

A White House official immediately said that the videotape shows that Ayman al-Zawahri  is "frustrated and angry" and on the run, but the visual evidence is exactly the opposite: intelligence officials confirm that this tape shows a strident al-Qaida leader who managed to get a tape out very quickly after this month's attack in Pakistan. On the tape, Zawahri is very forceful, not only saying that the U.S. did not get him during its strike, but threatening again to deliver body bags to the Pentagon. He appears to be very self-confident and seems to feel safe in his security.

The quality of the Zawahri tape is notable in that he is clearly in a studio -- delivering a well-produced message. This is in stark contrast to the scratchy audio quality of the Osama bin Laden tape that surfaced 10 days ago. And unlike the Zawahri audio tape on Jan 20, this is clearly current, referring to the Pakistan strike. It is a "proof of life" message aimed both at his followers and at the American public.

U.S. intelligence apparently had no warning of the al-Zawahri tape, but al-Jazeera was well prepared for it. When they first broadcast the tape, NBC analyst and Air Force Lt. Col. Rick Francona, ret., points out, they had a spokesman ready in London to reply and their own analyst, Larry Johnson, pre-positioned in the al-Jazeera Washington bureau.

The new message is clearly an attempt to undermine American support for the war in Iraq. Zawahri refers to the "truce" bin Laden offered and warns Americans that they are wasting lives and treasure in Iraq and Afghanistan. Francona describes this and the bin Laden tape as part of a calculated al-Qaida psychological warfare effort.

Ironically, these al-Qaida tapes seem to be backfiring. Bush's support for the war on terror goes up every time one appears.

Hmmmm? Bush is in a ratings slump, he's been caught having dark suits listening in on Americans for intelligence when they can't even find a giant walking around in Afganistan, and he's got a big SOTU speech to try to calm the masses - and ANOTHER tape shows up? Come on...

I think the reason Bush's ratings go up when these videos come out is because it reminds people who have forgotten what happened on 9/11. It also reminds people that democrats are whimps when it comes to defence of this country. Bush is not perfect but at least he is not a whimp. If Clinton had taken out Bin Laden when he had him in clear view we would not be talking about this right now. Clinton was to worried about what other country would think if he took him out. He had good reason to take him out after what happened with the Cole.

The American people have demonstrated throughout our history that when the going gets tough it only strengthens our resolve and unites us in our struggles. This only proves the saying “When the going get tough the tough get going.” And Americans are tough. This is a unique American or Anglo-Saxon trait. It is refreshing to see the American polls going up in support of the “War on Terror” every time one on these tapes appears. The media has been trying to paint a picture of a decrease of the American people’s resolve in this effort. Let’s keep our chins up. We are Americans, be proud!

LETS FACE IT. THIS ADMINISTRATION HAS FAILED MISERABLY. IN MY OPINION, THE OBJECT WAS TO GET BIN LADEN & THE OTHERS THAT MASTERMINDED THE ATTACK ON OUR NATION. WHAT HAPPENED?? WHY ARE THE MASTERMINDS STILL AT LARGE. REMEMBER?? DEAD OR ALIVE!! THIS ADMINISTRATION HAD A COMPLETELY DIFFERENT AGENDA & USED 9-11 AS ITS LAUNCHING PAD.

To me it all means that I don't care if your supporter of the Presidents Policies or not or if your a support of the Dems or the GOP. I don't care of Bush's ratings go up or go down. All I know is he keeps missing the target! Iraq was not where the folks were that attacked anyone or anything of the U.S.! So on that bases Bush doesn't seem to be doing the job he was hired for. That being the case I can't wait for some leadership that will obey the laws of the land and protect all Americans from those who do it harm! Andrea keep reporting the news good or bad just report the news as you always have by telling the world what you see and what others say and do!

Andrea,
I don't think anyone enjoys hearing members of the enemy verbally attack their leaders. It is very likely the reason members of other countries don't enjoy hearing President acting like a bully towards their leaders.

The terrorists are using propaganda to try to undermind our war effort..why? they are not succeeding with their terrorist war..
they talk about the U.S. killing innocents
what about the beheadings? killing innocent people by cutting off their heads with a saw
HOW barbaric. The Koran tells them it is alright to kill infidels..wake up folks that's all of us that don't believe the way they do...just think about the what is at stake here...our way of life..and one more thought...their slogan is 1st Saturday (Jews) then Sunday (Christains) don't be fooled by their truce offer..that is only a ploy to take the heat off of them..so they can regroup and recruit..remember one thing
if it weren't for the insurgents Iraq would be at peace. Just think about it

Zawahri'S AL-Q CAME OVER HERE AND KILLED OVER THREE THOUSAND OF OUR FAMILY AND FREINDS. BUT CALLS BUSH BUTCHER WHEN WE KILL 13 OF HIS FAMILY AND FREINDS.

THE WORDS THE MEDIA USES TO DESCRIBE THESE MEN SHOW WHO'S SIDE THEY ARE ON. If they use the word self-confident to discribe al-q they would use the word arogant to decribe Bush.-strident for al-q, stumbling for Bush. forceful for al-q overbearing for Bush. Postive for al-q negative for Bush.

I am perplexed by the fact that everytime one of these messages air, Bushes ratings go up. One would think the American people would realize dead or imprisoned men cannot make videos. How does the fact that the al-Qaida leaders are obviosly alive and well, making videos from a studio help Bush? People need to wake-up and stop praising Bush for failure.

Andrea, I don't believe AlQaeda tapes are necessarily meant to reduce support for Bush's 'war on terror' campaign in the sense that they do not want Bush to continue with it. On the contrary I think their purpose on the one hand is to tell the American people and the World at large that 'we wanted peace and not the war and we said so' and on the other hand to incite the neoconservatives to continue with what they are doing with even more vigour because that fits into the 'long term strategy' plan of AlQaeda atrributed to Al-Adel and alikes.

Andrea, You seem dissapointed that President Bush's
ratings are going up??? could it be that more people support the pres that you know????

If the secret eavesdropping is working out so well for national security why have we not been able to capture any of these hooligans?

And where is Osama?

What a joke!

Just what is the Bush Administration doing with all the intelligence they are gathering with their illegal wiretaps and domestic spying?

Instead of spying on law-abiding Americans the Bush Administration should concentrate on those who have actual access to al-Q and their allies.

Someone mush have called Larry Johnson in Washington and made another call to London.

Perhaps this is a case of having too much information and not knowing what to do with it all. Listening to and attempting to analysis all the calls made from a public phone booth in Baghdad that may or may not have been used once by al-Q 2 years ago is not the way to fight terrorism.

Andrea:

I am reading your new book. It is WONDERFUL.

Thanks for all you do

a question: does Andrea mean, in her last line, that President Bush only redoubles his efforts in the face of these tapes, or that public support for the president's policies goes up? It'a an important distinction, and her meaning is not clear.
