Around the Alito hearing room
After a day of sprinting (okay, walking and riding the subway) between Russell, Hart, Dirksen and the Capitol for television, radio and blogging responsibilities I'm back in the hearing room today.
Mrs. Alito, who yesterday made headlines when she broke down in tears after her husband endured a difficult day of questioning, today appears relaxed and composed. She's wearing winter white with a scarlet blouse that matches perfectly with her husband's tie. Her choice of clothing has been the subject of off-handed snipes this week, but today that's not the case (as if she hasn't been through enough this week!).
In case you're wondering what's up with all the paper in front of the committee - its mostly memos. I walked around during the last break and took a look. They are research talking points about things their respective staffs have been able to learn about Judge Alito and or opinions he's written in the past. Some of them have scribbled notes and others have blank Senate pads in front of them. Oh, and there are mints, butterscotch candies and bottles of water (what? no Raisinettes?).
And you'll also see a few "posters," those are the large blue Styrofoam poster board visual aids that senators like to use to show written text in large enough letters for the cameras. The posters are created in the print & graphics office downstairs and they are a staple here on the Hill.
"They're visual magicians," says a Democratic Senate staffer. "They make the most with what you give them."
The staffer says the office can usually crank out a request in under a couple of hours depending on its complexity- but don't try to get something made after-hours. Says the staffer, "If it can't be done during business hours you're out of luck."

As a wife and mother I can understand why Mrs. Alito broke down in tears. No one knows there husband better than his wife. If you know your husband is a good kind man and have to listen to personal attacks it would cut right to the bone. I always say you can talk about me but dont mess with my husband or kids. What she wanted to do is get up from her chair and knock the stuffings out of Kenndy. There is nothing to prove there comments about Alito. Ted Kenndy was called on that when he could not find anything in the papers from CAP. I still think he needs to make a statement himself and admit that.

I have watched most of the hearings related to Judge Alito. This is a good man, a solid judge, and a man of great integrity. The attacts on his character were over the top. Several Senators opposing his nomination were measured, careful, on target. Several Democartic Senators were engaging in forms of attack so low words cannot express.

How can people remember what they said or did 30 years ago. I bet the senators can not remeber what they did last week.
Also Senators are suppose to represent the people of there state and reflect people of that state's opinion and not of there own or the lobbiest. But do they do that. NO.
But they demand to any judge to tell them what their opinon is and senators get mad when the judge tell them that they do have personal opinion but they do not use them when they interpet the law and how the law came to be. I guess it good for the goose and not for the gander.

The Alito confirmation hearings, along with the Roberts confirmation hearings are perfect evidence for the American people to demand Congressional term limits. The circus is too big for the performers to get their act in prime time. The next election should not be the reason for such a pathetic perfomance by Senators. Shame on them and the people who elected them.

PLEASE -- Have you ever heard the expression "crocodile tears?" Mrs. Alito's staged performance complete with all hugs and smiles afterward is pure cheap histrionics. WAKE UP PEOPLE!
p.s. This is the first time I have ever responded to a "blog" but with this circus, enough is enough.

After watching the T.V. coverage of the Alito hearings, I have little doubt that the so called T.V. news is nothing more than a thinly vieled propaganda delivery machine for the big business-neoconservative thugs that have taken over the once great United States of America.
