Alito filibuster fails

The Senate has voted to forestall a planned filibuster by Democrats, who had hoped to delay a confirmation vote for Samuel Alito's nomination to the Supreme Court. The vote to cut off debate was 72-25, well over the 60 votes needed to succeed.

The actual vote on Alito's nomination is scheduled for tomorrow morning at 11:00 a.m. ET.
