The old adage goes, 'if it sounds too good to be true, it must be'.
It would be fantastic to be able to choose what channels you wish to pay for, but it's doubtful that it will ever come our way. Broadcasters wouldn't allow it to happen.
Congress, however much they like to flex their muscles, doesn't have the power to make a descision that would benefit the people.

Get real - the consumers will never win this one. This is the land of the $3.99 burger w/cheese, giant fries, and large soda verses $3.29 for just a plain burger!
If the pay-per-channel goes through, the cable companies will divide their current average monthly fee by 12 (or, some minimum number of channels their focus groups tell them people are likely to want) and then make that their per channel charge. They'll also offer a "package" of 72 channels for a slightly higher charge.
The FCC and congress will then proclaim that they've wrestled the cable-giants to the ground on behalf of the taxpayers!
But, it'll never get to that because the religious broadcasters will fight it tooth and nail for fear of losing access to new converts.

Most of cable is informercial, be it for pecs or Jesus, and so most needn't reach the retina, much less the mind. Best to have the choice to choose individually.

What about satellite packages for those in areas where cable is not available? Is there any consideration being given to allowing satelite viewers to select their own individual channels? I know I would elect to receive a LOT less channels, but those I selected would be ones I watch. And it seems to be that the local network channels should also be mandatory in any cable or satellite package.
