An anniversary
We'll keep it short this Friday. Author's prerogative. We've spent a lot of this day celebrating our one-year anniversary on the air. We had a very nice lunch in one of our studios, at which I tried to express my thanks to the best team in our business. I expressed my frustration over the fact that our medium cannot "widen out" to show the audience the smart, talented, dedicated, loyal and brave folks who work so hard every day to get us on the air. I am so lucky to be their colleague, and equally lucky to call them all friends. I'd prefer to shift the focus to them, and the work they do, on occasions like this one.
We had planned all day to begin tonight's broadcast with the economy. The numbers of late have been truly positive, and good news for the administration. The President spoke on the topic today from the Rose Garden, no doubt hoping his words would dominate the news cycle. We later learned that an hour before his remarks, he was briefed on the news that was to be released later from Iraq: the U.S. lost 10 of its best today, Marines, all killed in Fallujah, where 11 other Marines were also wounded. We'll tell their story tonight and check on the status of what some have called a 'low-level' Civil War developing there.
Pete Williams has our piece on the death penalty tonight, Martin Savidge has a special story about pet rescues (and those still in peril) in the Gulf Region (a story of great importance to all of us who are pet lovers) and finally tonight: Kevin Tibbles on a former Marine General who these days is making a huge difference in people's lives.
I should not let an anniversary like this pass without thanking those who watch the broadcast that we work so hard to compile each day. Knowing you are watching makes it a great honor to come to work each day. We hope you'll join us for tonight's broadcast. Have a great weekend.

Good stuff you and the team provide. It's obvious that you have a strong team. Great work to everyone.

I used to watch you on MSNBC and thought, "They're going to tag him as the next anchor for Nightly News." No, not prophetic, just obvious. Congratulations!

Greetings on your one year anniversary, I having been mostly a Peter Jennings gal, and I do miss him so.
I felt such a level of comfort Brian when you located yourself in the Superdome on the 28th, you had me. Please never stop the honest in depth reporting on Katrina.I was quite disgusted to hear of Bob Wrights comment that liberals don't watch tv. I was quite insulted by that and will be leary of the network for a while because of that. but Best Wishes to Nightly

Congratulations on your first year with the NBC Nightly News. The program has been my evening news show of choice since the days of John Chancellor. Nightly News did not miss a beat during the transition from Chancellor to Tom Brokaw, and, once again, it has maintained its high level of fairness, accuracy and quality under you, Mr. Williams. All the best for many more years.

I started watching Nightly News at about the time you came in... Since then I never watched anything else! Keep up this wonderful work you are doing. Congrats to you & your team!

Happy anniversary Brian and family! I enjoy every piece of news, comments, and words that you all give us. Brian Williams, you are one of my favorite journalists, and you have the same attitude about the news as your predecessor, Tom Brokaw. Thank you Brian and family for impacting my life, and giving me something to shoot for in life...maybe one day being an anchor or reporter for NBC News!

Brian, thanks for doing a great job. Early returns indicate you might be up to replacing Peter Jennings for me. Most important is that you cover the story and are as fair and balanced as any news show today (not like that other network that cheerleads for the side they support).
Now, a question I hope you can answer. I continue to watch the coverage of New Orleans, and am frankly appalled that this can happen in our country with such callous disregard by our government. I have contributed to the Red Cross to help, but have the sense (right or wrong) that this isn't helping much. Can you suggest any organizations for which I can be assured the money is actually getting to and helping the victims without delay?

What a first year anniversary it has been...and what great work you've done---admirable stuff. Plus, you're a pet lover too ~ that just completes the picture for me :-)

Happy one year anniversary Mr. Williams!! Hard to believe it's one year already! After the Tsunami in Asia, the death of the pope, the election of the pope, and also the recent hurricane season, you are still rockin' strong!! Keep up the good work, and always remember, you will always be invited into our living room, on every evening, everyday!

Congratulations. Here's some good news. There will soon be an end to your "frustration" over the fact that you cannot "'widen out' to show the audience the smart, dedicated, talented, loyal and brave folks" who bring us NBC Nightly News. NBC will soon be taking advantage of new media technology to provide television portraits of its key personnel — profiles we can access in the same way we access television news stories via this wonderful world wide web that allows me to deliver a message to you as I could never deliver it to Chet or David or John or Tom. I've grown up with these guys and could not be happier that I can now provide input to an NBC Nightly News "anchor" in a manner this convenient. Imagine what it will be like when seemail accompanies email and I can offer you a "look" at what I think. You've got a great opportunity to write the next chapter in network news and I wish you and your colleagues the best of luck. I encourage you to think about what you will be saying and what we will be saying on your 10th anniversary. Hopefully, you and your colleagues will take time regularly to consider the possibilities for a community of interest in the events that shape our lives. Happy Anniversary Folks.

Brian,
Congratulations on year 1 to you and your team. You are right, every single one of the reporters are outstanding that work for NBC. I watch your news online via msnbc website.
What I enjoy the most about you personally is that you remain humble despite a national status being on TV 5 days a week. It shows your drive and that you do not take your job for granted, translation you value your audience. I know you know this..the Challenge remains can you be as down to earth, 5, 10, 20 years from now as your gravitas increases.
My concern, tonights broadcast, you led tonights piece about the 10 marines death with a comment that minutes before the President knew yet walked out in swagger and talked about how great the economy is. Was the president highly insensitive, absolutely. Your comments though made you seem partial. It gives the FOX News "Fair and Balanced" watchers every right to accuse you of being a lefty. You seemed a lefty to me, who is a Brian Williams fan. I am sure because I am a fan I do hold you to a higher standard.
Let David Gregory be the Pit Bull that he is. He does his job amazingly well. That comment should have came from him or Kelly O'donnell. You got to stay above the fray. It's important for me to know that you are unbiased in your reporting despite your personnel view. By the way. Some body tell David Gregory, I am glad he is such a pleasant pit bull that holds the administration accountable.
Have a Merry Christmas, Hannukah, and New Year NBC News.

Brian, I have grown to have a great deal of respect for you over the past few months. You seem to be excellent at your job. Your broadcasts are wonderful. A tribute to both you and your fine crew. Thank you for this blog and also for your new feature "NetCast" (the nightly news delayed on the internet). It is the only news I get to see. God bless you all and Merry Christmas.

Since the death of Peter Jennings I have been looking for news that is unbiased and brings the human element into the newscast. You have become the only nightly news that I watch. Thank you for your witty and insightful comments and for not just blindly giving us the spin. I did have to laugh when your report supported the Bush line saying that the economy was so good why do the polls give Bush such a bad rating on the economy. Maybe you have forgotten that he took a trillion dollar surplus and turned it into an astronomical deficit which we now will be paying for with cuts in education, social programs and increased taxes.

Congratulations Brian on your first year at the helm. I was a huge Brokaw fan over the years and was saddened when I heard that he would be leaving the broadcast. Though I think he is greatly missed, you have done an outstanding job filling his shoes. I still watch every night and I feel that you have maintained the integrity that Mr. Brokaw established over the years. Thank you for your hard work and dedication to maintaining a broadcast that easily could have faded away. Keep up the great work and I will keep watching.

Brian - Congrats to you and the entire team. You've carried on in the tradition of Dr. Hunter S.Thompson (Dr. of Journalism / RIP) by never losing sight of your primary responsibility - covering the story. My hope for the future is twofold: a return to the hour we used to enjoy with you on MSNBC; and a reminder that you still remain mere miles from the Lincoln Tunnel, jointly operated by the Port Authorities of New York and New Jersey. Here's to many, many more. Yours truly - TC

It's an honor to watch Nightly News every night. I agree with you that it takes a dedicated staff backing you to make it to air every night. But you are doing a great job as well and it shows in how you present the news. Good luck in all your endeavors.

I've been a 'fan' before you took the helm and I hardly ever miss a broadcast. AS much as I enjoy looking at Elizabeth Vargas these days [ABC] I always return to the peacock because I believe you have the finest reporters in TV news. Along with an anhcor of equal caliber, I'm sure to be a 'fan' for a long time. Thanks for a great first year.
Fred Cole, Jacksonville, FL (Sent Dec 2, 2005 6:17:22 PM)
Congratulations! I've watched you from day one and not at all surprised that you're doing well. I've seen all your appearances on the Daily Show, as well as on Letterman's show. YOU'RE FUNNY!I don't recall ever seeing you on the Tonight Show? Just as well. I only watch you and West Wing (when it's on) on NBC.
Paco Bryson, Thousand Oaks, California (Sent Dec 2, 2005 6:15:42 PM)
Brian,
There is no doubt in my mind you are the next Peter Jennings for years to come. I was a great fan of Mr. Jennings and quite honestly you remind very much of him. Your delivery and jestures are very similar. Most importantly you are a great reporter. Your coverage of hurricane katrina is a testimony to your honesty and ability to leave the script and take the story to the next level. Compassion, concern and love of your fellow human being.
Please keep the katrina story alive. It is very important to keep the rest of us in this country aware of the neglect of our goverment to it's citizen.
Take care Brian continued and to you and your loved ones have a wonderful, safe and healthy happey new year.
Carl Bartelli, Mastic New York (Sent Dec 2, 2005 6:09:22 PM)
Brian,
Congratualtions on your first year! I have noticed a tilt to the left on your newscast however. The negativity coming out of Iraq and Bush poll numbers night after night drives me to turn off the news. I know from people who have been to Iraq that none of the good news gets out. No wonder we have to pay the Iraqis to publish positive stories, they aren't getting a fair handshake from Al Jazerra nor the American media. It seems you guys want us to withdraw with our tail between our legs.
