TRACKBACKS
My husband is taking an early retirement in the spring '06. We're selling our home in nearly sunny California (which we have enjoyed for the last 27 years) and moving 'back home' to the tippy-top part of NY State on the Can. border. Although we are just 56, and far from being financially well off, we are counting our blessings, trading in hours of commute stand-still, to stand still in the quiet meadows green or white, depending on the season, and to be near our aging parents and siblings.
I don't think of the coming years as golden, more like tin. It's a simple life were people tell the truth, because it's easy to catch them in a lie. Where a hand shake means it's a done-deal,and a word kept.
It's also the reclaimation of our souls when we have had to compromise some of our principles to get along with the 'team'. I can already feel the tension in my chest ease just thinking of hearing the crickets again.

I am 54 and there isn't a golden year on the horizon.. possibly silver or lead, but not golden. I started my working life at 17 and now some 13 jobs later I have been through layoffs, downsizing, buyouts, reduction in forces, and every form of job castration you can imagine. Through no fault of my own, I have been shown the door because someone decided my job wasn't needed anymore. Call it what you will, but I am mad as hell... and I don't want to take it anymore!
