Keeping the faith

I am standing here on top of layers of debris watching Martin shoot his standup at a destroyed Catholic elementary school. What was once a classroom is now an open air junkyard. The sisters in charge are jumping through hoops to keep some normalcy in these kids' lives. I met the pastor when he came out to see what we were up to. He is mighty concerned about the number of parishes affected in the Diocese of Biloxi. It will be a long time before they can rebuild. You'll see more tonight in our story.

You left out the best part. When the man was walking over the slab where his house had been, showing where different things had been. He said that he liked looking out at the Gulf. then he said, "The storm Just opened it up", and you were so shocked at his words that you almost fell into the marsh before recovering enough to ask him how he could be joking.
I grew up in Lake Charles and some of my family is still there, including my 95 year old mother.

I am a counselor in Pascagoula. I worked at the middle school (Trent Lott Middle School) for several years and St. Peters and Sacred Heart, along with our district's public elementary schools, were our feeder schools. I now work at the high school and many of my students younger brothers and sisters are students in your story. Thanks so much for telling this tale. The people of Pascagoula are independent folks who operate in self help mode normally. But the scale of the devastation and destruction in our town is something we never imagined. We will be dealing with the psychological aftermath of Katrina long after our homes and lives are rebuilt.
